HORNS NOT WORKING

Hi All
I have an 04 plate 2.2 zed unfortunately the horns have stopped working. I have checked both the fuses and they are ok. I am told that there is a horn relay, does anyone know where it is located and is it easy to get at . Many Thanks

The relay (K2) is behind the glovebox on the power distribution module (fuse box).

Whilst it might be the relay, my fear is that it might be the actual horns themselves. Both of mine gave up the ghost and were not repairable. Took me a long time to find a low horn that actually worked!

As parabolica said could well be the horns, having 2 horns on the car it may be that you had not noticed one was already out,the wires corroding is pretty common due to the amount of damp that area holds, sometimes you can just strip back the wires and add a pair of bullet crimp connecters and they may still be alive

One of mine failed last year & it sounded awful with just the one. I had to remove the bumper to fit a new splash guard so fitted these from ebay at the same time: https://bit.ly/3jJHUjF
Didn't need the relay & they sound great, well as good as horns sound

Hi everyone,

I'm had my Z4 for about 6 months now, it's a 2007 3.0si. Apart from a faulty thermostat, the car has been faultless.
Last week I noticed that my horn has stopped working, looked inside the bumper and noticed that one of the wires on the connector has perished.
Replaced it, checked the other one seams fine. Checked the fuses, all good.
Horn still doesn't work, when pressing on the steering wheel i hear clicking from the fuse box.
I have removed the fuse box to look for the relay and I can't find it :headbang:
I know that loads of people say it's a K2 but non of my relays is a K2.

Was wondering if anybody has any ideas?
Don't want to spend £ on new horns if that want sort the issue.

Thanks

Whilst the wires do corrode and fixing the connectors can work, the horns are also known to just pack in too so it could be that it is just actually kaput

Thanks for the quick reply.

Update: went to my friend to check if there is power in the horn cable, no power. Checked horn by plugging it to a car battery, working fine.

Any ideas what to do next?

Thanks

Hi,
Thought about doing that, was really hopping someone had similar issue and knows which relay to look for. I'm not particularly skilled when it comes to electronics.
Thanks for your help

this is from memory so might be be wrong but i think the horn relay is behind the left front strut tower(right side as you look into the engine bay) there are 2 rows of 4 relays in the box in the middle, the horn relay is the 2nd one on the top row, try swapping it out for one of the other relays and see how you get on. EDIT... this image is from another bmw but I'm sure the layout is the same

Hi,

I'll have a look once I get a minute.
I'm positive that the back of my fuse box has only 4 relays.
I took them all out, 1 by 1 and still heard clicking from the board when pressing the horn.
I'll try to post some pictures.

Thanks for all the help

Update:

Finally got time to have a look at it today.
When I open the two boxes in the engine bay i can't see any relays.
Don't know if I'm just being stupid or what...

This is what I see, fuses and connectors in one box and connectors and ECU (I think).

Sorry if I sound totally dumb I just don't have a clue what I'm doing...

Right, final update.
Horn is working, started unplugging and plugging all connectors and relays (as any good amateur would do) and hoping that something has gotten loose. And I was in luck, the horn is back on :D

Took 4 attempts and beginner's luck but its working.

Thanks again for all the help
