Horns and light washers

Hi all,

So I posted the other day about the lights and their poor quality. I still don't have the bulbs but I have increased the height slightly so we'll see what that does. It seems to be the dipped lights that are the problem. Why do the lenses look like xenon lights? the main beam are halogen (I have the manual beam adjuster in the car) but inside the headlight it has that cats eye effect lens cover?

anyhow there are a couple of other issues with the car so I had a go a diagnosing them in my lunch break.

Horn - So I have no horn. I've checked the fuses and they are fine and I've also checked the relay (its clicking when I press the horn) so does this mean both horns have died? Can anyone recommend some good units to replace these with?

headlight washer - the off side works fine but the near side doesn't pop up. having a look through the inspection hole (what a good idea BTW) I can see red screen wash leaking from the bottom. see pick below (red circle). I presume if its leaking fluid it won't have enough pressure to lift the washer? Can this be fixed or do I need to get a replacement and if so, again, can anyone suggest a good place to get one.

Thats exactly where mine was leaking. At first I chucked a load of silicone sealant around it, but within a few weeks it began leaking again so the only option was to buy a new one.

For reference, it was £55 from bmminiparts, probably about the same as a dealer would charge.

Fitting is simple but take the bumper off. Will take no more than 15 minutes.

anyone got any suggestions on the horns? I've looked on ebay but they all seem to have different connectors. Would the E46 horn fit as it looks like it would.

Try realoem for part number, you will be able to see if e46 matches the zed part, try e46 330 some parts are used on both.

Just to let anyone else who needs horns know that I've had a look at some E46 horns (from a 2004 318) and they seem to fit and they have the same connector. I’ll be fitting them this weekend so will let you know if they work. They were only £10 for the pair so worth a punt.

I’ve had enough of people pulling out in front of me and no real way to express my anger.

or this :D

btw - have you checked the connectors at the horn point - make sure that the power is getting through? I'm surprised both high and low tones have gone at the same time...

For the headlights stick a HID kit in. Would never suggest it for reflectors (plenty of chavs round here...) but I have excellent beam cut-off and never get flashed by oncoming traffic.

How easy are these to install and what kit do I need to be looking for? I’m happy changing gearboxes etc but when it comes to electronics i’m a bit of a noob.

p.s it’s a 2006 Coupe with halogen lights.

Headlight washer is a replacement job.
Our ///M was peeing washer fluid quicker than I could put it in and the unit needed replacing.

It has to be working for an MOT as well so needs doing.

They work!

I now have a nice loud set of horns again. All for the princely sum of £10 from the ebay. They are second hand but look absolutely mint. I was very sceptical that both horns would have failed but obviously that's what happened. Now I can toot the horn at the various wildlife that gets in my way, and the drives that decided to pull out in front of me. Before I've just had to wave like a loony and try and express my disappointment in their driving skills with a few flashes of the lights. :driving:
