Not new to BMW but I am to the Z4 , spent most of today trolling the posts for knowledge on what to look out for

What a well laid out informative site with all the answers in one place 👍

I have been through eight BMW amongst other cars in my time and I keep coming back , I am a long standing member of BMWland

Having just got rid of my 420 convertible due to a company car (Volvo) being forced upon me I am now on the hunt for a cheaper Z4 weekend car to fulfil my thirst to drive a drivers car.

Hopefully this will be the first of many posts

2.2 upwards after the 6 pot , roadster under 80k 2006 onwards , I am very patient so will wait for a bargain 😁 right time to buy middle of winter

Not sure the 2.2 was available as late as 06, cars after this are known as facelift cars and the 6pot engines changed from the older m54 to the n52 magnesium engine with a bit more power but only available as 2.5 or 3litre capacity.
On the plus side, they don’t use any more fuel than the 2.2 anyway

Welcome to the forum, don't discount the early E85, plenty of lovely examples out there, great engines (6 pot) and the best rear end of the bunch.
If you can find one with wood dash (rare) then you sir are onto a winner

I have seen a few with wooden dash’s I was trying to avoid these they remind me of the triumph herald or Morris minor 😁

Is there any disadvantage to the older model except difrence in power , not keen on the orange indicators all round prefer more modern white lenses however if right car comes along I won’t turn it down because of orange lenses

Welcome a board. Pick which ever one suits your fancy. I don't think they made a bad one.
Me I wanted a hardtop and a convertible with a 6 pot stick.

Not really - the pre-facelift 6 cylinder models have an earlier generation of engine that tends to be slightly cheaper to maintain.

And apart from the tango indicators, I think the front end looks better with the circular fog-lights.

The only other downside is you will struggle to find one with the M-Sport seats that are so desirable. They were standard on any facelift Sport model, but there was no pre-facelift Sport model. "cooky3"s car has them if you want to see the difference.

God, you can go off someone very quickly :poke:

Lol , I honestly did not realise these were rare I have seen a few with cream leather , bet it was an expensive option when new
I wouldn’t let the trim put me off the right car so not ruling the wood out :D

Whatever you do once you've got one don't fit a stubby aerial to it, or he'll go right off you again.

I think there’s sometimes a fine line between “rare” and “undesirable”

Nicely put - sometimes things are rare for a reason!

Now where is my flak-jacket.

I was attempting to be diplomatic 😁 tweed jacket & driving gloves spring to mind with wooden dashes
Ooh suits you sir
