Hood motor repair

Hi newbie here - I will introduce myself properly when I have photos available of the car '54 SE, 3.0

Have just bought the car with a hood problem, I was aware of the issue before purchace as I had the local BMW dealers check out the car.

A number of minor, service type issues, a broken rear spring and a non operating hood. I had found this site so was aware of the issue and potential costs and as a result have bought the car at a VERY reasonable price following the BMW technician telling me it seemed a first class car given issues present.

So the question is as I am short of space for removing hood and working on the car can anyone give me recommendations for a west midlands indy or specialist who might be trusted to do a good job at at reasonable price?

Advice and guidance needed please - thanks

Norman

Are you saying you changed a main roof motor without removing the roof? If so I'm sure a lot of people would love to know the method, the motor is enclosed in the cavity under the roof :? ?

:D

I think he means just lifting up one side of the roof where the motor is. I was worried of bending something, so I took mine completey out

I dont see what you would gain doing it that way, apart from alot more effort.

Much easier to just pull it all out and have much more room to work with!

Cheers

Yer pays yer money and takes yer choice.

I did mine in about 4 hours all told and I didnt need help. the only difficult bit was having the courage to tug the hoop out of its fixture with enough oompf.

If you take the whole roof off, not only do you need two people but you also have to try and get it back in the right position afterwards which isnt necessarily a banal job.

do a search for shipkiller and look at his howto guides..

its an easy job DIY, where are you located maybe someone can help you

Thats great but i already have found those fantastic details - i was wonder how to do it without removing the complete hood!!

I'm based just north of worcester if there's anyone around here..........???

Looked on the forum and saw reference to Autotech Performance telford, went to see Pete and he gave me confidence to ask him to:

1 replace the Hood Motor
2 check the steering for faults
3 re-program my keys
4 fit up-graded headlight bulbs!!! (off the cuff today)

Well dropped the car to him about 9:00 amd (after a 50 mile journey) and went to waste time - gave up at 2:00pm ish and went back to garage.

To cut a long story short all done (took a while but he had broken a rib yesterday and was suffering) with an all in cost of £595 (plus £21 for a pair of upgraded bulbs). Absolutly delighted, very professional even downloaded a software upgrade for the steering and installed it.

Would not hesitate to recommend.
