Hood cleaning problems

After a poor experience with a valeters, I spent around 4 hours yesterday cleaning my black Z4M, which turned out well. I cleaned the hood using Autoglym kit, which comes with a separate cleaner and protector sprays. The cleaning stage was ok, but problems came from using the protector spray. From the info on the back, it says to spray this onto a damp hood but does not say to remove it, so this is what I did. It also mentions to rub off straight away if you get it on paint or glass and to let dry for 24 hours before exposing to rain. Some of it got on the glass/paint and showed itself as lots of specks of very hard stuff but I managed to get this off during cleaning before waxing the car. However, after waking up this morning, it has rained a little at night and there was some dustyness on the paint around the hood, which I'm guessing is some of the protection stuff which has washed off by rain down onto the paintwork.

My question is:

1) Is it right to leave the Autoglym hood pretector on when applied.
2) If its rained within 24 hours, do I need to do the hood again with washer/protector to ensure its properly protected?
 
Yes you are meant to leave it on aslong as its soaked in and not sitting on top as this will leave white residue marks. Once completely dry it should be fine, seems like you may have been abit unlucky and it wasnt 100% dry when it rained.

If the hoods still clean then i'd just re apply the protector.
 
I wasn't impressed with the ease of applying the Autoglym protector stuff. Luckily I applied it by sponging it onto the roof (I emptied the bottle into a tub) and doing it inside a windless garage. I found the spray a complete PITA.

I'd try and get another layer of protector on if you can, possibly using it like I did.
 
Well.. I'd be happy to protect again, but, whilst the hood does look a lot better than it did, in daylight, you can still see the slight residue from bird crap that I removed before (which is a patch about an inch square which is slightly lighter and has some white bits stuck in between the threading of the hood). I'm not sure whether to wash it again (which I'm worried will wear it out a bit as its a proper wash very soon) or try and get this out with something else first. Any suggestions?
 
Re the bird crap ive used the AG cleaner to remove and sometimes there is a very slight difference to the rest of the hood but a couple of good soaks with a hose and normally OK.

Re the protector as above another coat will not hurt.

Re the protector getting on the body work easily removed with AG Super Resin Polish
 
I too dont rate AG, have had many issues with them , just gets very messy to apply ,the one i use now and cant praise enough is RENOVO ULTRA PROOFER, you apply it with a brush so it soaks into the fabric, a bit tricky on the sides of hood, i place towels on paint work to protect this area, Renovo is used on boat covers as well, i use it on all my convertibles and as it says on the can, lasts 6 mths and its true, still repells water, great stuff !! i did this yesterday too - i wiped residue off with a cloth whilst applying and i have no spots on the glass. i found its your trigger action that makes it easy or hard to apply, you need to do a firm, not too quick, full pull on the trigger and and keep your hand moving so you dont over spray in areas. this was the same for the cleaner too. so far im please with the results, hood looks better, even the rub marks are less obvious, a good £20 spent i think.
 
I didn't use Autoglym before, but BMW Impregnating Agent (£19.25) is very good and easy to apply too.

Did you use the Renovo cleaner first or just rinse the hood as i still have loads of AG cleaner left but not to keen on mixing products.

I will be ordering Renovo soon ready to treat my hood for the next 6 months protection.
 
I've got various cleaners from different kits i've tried, AG .. RAG TOPP etc. in fact i have not tried RENOVO cleaner yet but will do when i run out, i not so sure there is much between the cleaners, its the Protector thats important. Its available from most boat chandlers ,if you have one close
