Honeymoon in Italy - seeking advice

I am getting married next July and am looking at booking a 10/14 day honeymoon in Italy. Whilst I am pretty well travelled, I have never been to Italy and know little about it.

I am starting to research into it now but wondered if anyone has any advice about places to visit or an ideal itinerary for a 2 week holiday

We are not the type to just relax by the pool, we like to get out and see things, but given it's a honeymoon, a calmer and slower pace will be favoured.

Was getting tempted by South Italy (Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast) but then spoke to a colleague who is from North Italy and she made that sound fantastic (Lake Como / Garda, Cinque Terre, Florence, Venice).
 
Lake Como is beautiful and close to Milan so you get the city and the countryside all in one. We went a couple of years ago in September and loved it there.
Florence isn't too far away too and I'd definitely say pop there for a few days it's lovely (although it was a few years back I went).

Venice - not for me.... I went in August time (really hot) and it stank!!
 
Last time I was in Florence a gang of kids tried to rob us in the street in broad daylight, it's a beautiful city but it rather put me off.

I spent some time years back in the Naples area, lots of places to visit including Pompeii and the Amalfi coast, enjoyed it a lot.
 
I am in Sorrento now and done the amalfi drive which is good now but would be terrible in July. Nice place though

I have heard that it smells terrible a few times now. If we were to go there it would only be for 1-2 days I imagine.
 
I've just come back from a weeks holiday in Lake Garda. It was absolutely stunning. We stayed at Peschiera del Garda, and did a lake tour by bus and ferry which was amazing. Nice restaurants, markets in Bardolino on Thursday if memory serves (I sat at cafe and drank espresso whilst the missus went handbag shopping!!), and beautiful weather!
I'd recommend going to Malcesine and getting the cable car up to the top of the mountains, but book it on the day rather than in advance; it can be hazy depending on the weather, in which case you wont see much! The other place that I thought was well worth a trip was Limone. Really pretty harbour town!

The only thing I'd change would be to maybe get a hotel in a smaller town further up the coast to be more immersed in it, rather than at a our hotel, which was really nice, but was quite separate, meaning we had to get the (free) bus in to town...

We will definitely be going again, if that helps! :D

Aside from that, I've not been anywhere else in Italy! :roll:
 
Venice is fine for a day or two, in the cobbled streets, gardens and small restaurants you wont smell much.

The main plaza is very busy and the water buses are quite fun..

Luckily we hotelled some distance out but a bus journey was sufficient for visists.
 
Hi Wilbo, Lake Garda is an excellent honeymoon destination, plenty to see and do. Hire a car and drive to Venice or Verona. Austria isn't to far away to drive to also the Dolomites are easy to get to. You could also hire a mountain bike, there are some great rides in the mountains around the lake. Also Monza isn't million miles away, might be able to take in an event. Have a good honeymoon where ever you go.

Is there enough to see and do for a 14 night holiday or would you recommend combining with another resort as a twin-centre?
 
I guess it depends how active you are, you could have 2-3 nights in be Venice for example, which wouldn't be a bad idea as I don't think you can do it all properly in one day( might be pricey though peak season). I 've been to lake Garda 3 or 4 times now and can always find things to do although the older I get the happier i am just taking it easy on a beach, also if you windsurf the northern end of the lake is a windsurfers paradise. Hope this helps.

start off in Milan ...... Train to Venice ..... then add either Piza or Rome .......
Lots of sights, lots of shops, lots of cafe' s to sit outside of and watch the world go by :thumbsup:
 
Looks like North Italy is favoured by most. Was looking at images of Lake Garda earlier and think that has to be one of the locations.
 
Had a week in Vernazza on the Cinque Terre in April. Apartment in the castle battlements with a balcony literally over the sea. Stunning place and the best of the 5 towns. Pisa/Genoa/Florence/Venice not far either.
