Home Diesel Generators

Hi all,

Having an issue at the property I let out where by SSE came and cut off the power last week (long story). Ive had to fork out over £4k to have 2 new connections put in, however in the meantime the tenants are without power.

Does anyone know much about these silent diesel generators? I've seen a 12.5kva system (10kw) but have a few questions:

1) I presume I require a single phase generator to power a uk domestic fuse box
2) How are they wired up? I see 2 large gorrila ports (red and blue) but have no idea how these go into a fuse box?
3) Can the generator be placed inside the home or does it need to be external due to exhaust fumes?
4) Anything I should be wary of / avoid? I know that desktop computers are supposedly a no no on these types of generators.

Thanks in advance.

I have used a few at work, but im no expert.

A 12.5Kva will be fairly big, so you will need some space.

It wont be silent, but the motor will be inside a noise insulated housing.

The Blue is usually single phase, and the red three phase 410v. You would probably need someone to wire a port into your house supply to accept the generator, but I have no idea on this. A prvious office I worked at had a plug put on the outside of the office, so that the generator could just be plugged straight into it with a cable.

How are you going to fuel the thing? Be careful as a landlord, and make sure its safe for your tenants. Neighbours may complain if nearby due to noise and fumes. Yes, it needs to be outside.

Just searched this so you can see the size: http://www.premierplanthire.co.uk/power-generators-for-hire/power-generation?gclid=CI3is6zCvsYCFSrpwgodPV0AJw

Thanks Rob,

This is very useful info, I will check that company out too. Although the 50h restriction may not be suitable..

No Worries. I have never used that company, just a google search to show you the size of it.

I forgot to say, that you don't want to be running sensitive equipment off them either. We have similar, but marine units on our work vessels and we never run our equipment off them. They are either run through inverters/battery chargers, or an Online UPS setup.

I bought a diesel generator two years ago when UK Powernet were going to cut me off for 3 days due to the re-laying of power cables. Noisy things, I put it in my carport and run my entire office and house on it (only essentials in the house like the fridge / freezer etc, no washing machines).

Why would you not run computer equipment on it? (my systems run through APC units to filter the spikes but otherwise seems happy for anything)

I would not have it in the house as the noise is way above acceptable levels!

Thanks guys, after speaking to the tenants it sounds like they want to run the bare essentials, specifically:

Sky Router
Laptop chargers (maybe) they will make sure to charge them at work daily
Maybe a lamp or two?

All in all I think the requirement is going to actually be well under 1000w and for less than 6 hours a day. So now Im thinking about going for one of the very small portable ones or some other form of power..
