Quite common sadly, heard about several different types of car having the same issue after a service from main dealers and specialists. Probably just cross threaded the filter or over tightened it and it has cracked. As long as you caught it which it sounds like you did then it should just be a new filter and refill the oil, hopefully just a minor issue and easily fixed.

That's good to hear, think you're right, just been unlucky I guess...does anyone know though if the oil filter should have a seal of any kind?

Thanks - have emailed the dealer so will see what they come back with, will def get a clear light. Thank God I caught the oil problem before it got bellow the minimum!

Yikes!

It'll be interesting to see if the filter is the problem, or incorrect fitment was to blame.

Either way it's a good thing it was spotted. I'd be having words if it was incorrect fitment! I'd be surprised if you can overtighten and damage an oil filter unless they are weak. I've never heard of that before ever. Another thing to look out for there then!

Well the guy in the garage removed it and there was no rubber seal which he was expecting but it's not a BMW garage so not sure if there should be a rubber seal??? Does anyone know?

+1 glad you got your car

The brake light cracking there is a common problem and you should get it replaced by the dealer. They cost almost £50, so worth getting it done. The clear version is the same price from BMW and looks way better on Sterling grey so I'd 'upgrade'.

Actually the clear one is £7 cheaper than the red :D Agree it looks miles better on the grey!

I'm not really familiar with the BMW parts specifically for this engine, but the seal on all the filters I have ever seen is part of the filter itself, though I guess with effort you might pull it off, but I'm not sure why.

Weird. I'd sort of want to try get to the bottom of it though. Maybe the filter was just a one-off damaged one that got through quality control and on to your car :(

Either way, sounds like the damage has been averted, which is the main thing :)

Well you live amd learn - dealer told me they were the same price. Still to be accurate a clear is £44.43 plus VAT as at 16th October.

Maybe they have brought them in line with each other now :idunno:

It was cheaper when I bought it :)

Not sure about this one at all. When the black fuel filter top shown in a picture I found below (not sure if this is a Z4 but looks the same) is taken off there is no gasket or seal of any kind just threads, not sure if this is normal or maybe hasn't been torqued up right, if this is the case I'm a bit worried because the garage is just a run of the mill local garage and will not have the right tourque equipent to deal with it. Actually now I think about it they'll probably do a better job than the BM garage!

I doubt if there was no seal on your oil filter because you wouldn't have got home, oil would drain/leak very quick. It'll be interesting if you can tell me what the actual problem was.

well I don't belive it my car is in the garage!!!!! I hope this is not a sign of things to come but I have an oil leak!

Nipped down the shops and the oil light came on, checked the oil and it was down to minimum and there was oil on the ground. Went up to the local garage and they checked it and as I suspected the oil filter was to blame (just been serviced).

They started up the engine and when reved the oil came out of the filter, there was no seal on the filter - is this normal?!

Good news it's an easy fix but the engine bay at the bottom iscovered in oil. AArrgggggg!

They are fixing it tomorrow, off to email the dealer about both problems and make sure I get my money back....

Just to add, having another think the 3.0 uses an oil cartriage not the normal screw onto the block type, if that is where it's leaking then you'd clearly see it under the bonnet?

Yip I watched the oil streaming out of the oil 'housing' (the solid casing which holds the filter itself) it is flowing out of where the black plastic screw top meets the silver metal casing (shown in the pic above), it was really flowing out.

Just been contacted by the dealer and he is paying for it no probs. UPDATE - dealer is paying for the brake light too, which is great news!

P.S. anyone know where I can get a proper engine clean (maybe steam clean?) in Scotland?

Be carefull who cleans your engine be better getting your hands dirty and doing it yourself.

Glad you got things sorted

Hi - can someone remind me what the 17"' alloys are called on my car (page 4 of this thread) - think I'm going to sell em fairly soon?

Thanks.

Cheers - probably going to fit the 18"s this weekend, I can't wait any longer and I need the money!

Looking for £280 for the 17"s (style 103's in superb condition just one small kurb on one wheel, with run flats, two with very good tread and two brand new just done 500 miles each).

I'll post up a proper ad on the buy and sell with pics and stuff on the weekend.

Cheers. :)
