I got an automated call today from ‭ ‭020 7286 9464
The message said something along the lines of I had defrauded HMRC and that if I didn’t press 1 on my key pad to speak to an advisor then court action would be taken and I would be arrested.
I hung up

Bogus phone calls
HMRC is aware of an automated phone call scam which will tell you HMRC is filing a lawsuit against you, and to press one to speak to a caseworker to make a payment. We can confirm this is a scam and you should end the call immediately.

This scam has been widely reported and often targets elderly and vulnerable people.

Other scam calls may offer a tax refund and request you to provide your bank or credit card information. If you cannot verify the identity of the caller, we recommend that you do not speak to them.

If you’ve been a victim of the scam and suffered financial loss, report it to Action Fraud.

The calls use a variety of phone numbers. To help our investigations you should report full details of the scam by email to: [email protected], including the:

date of the call
phone number used
content of the call

I had a similar call. I was waiting for my wife so pressed 1. It gave me much amusement as I kept them on the phone for just under 40 minutes thinking I was taking it seriously. The funny thing is that they then told me to F.. Off when they wised up to me scamming them.

Have you received the £500 phone bill yet for pressing 1? :?

Probably the wife on the line.

There’s always someone trying to make easy money from unsuspecting people.
How do they manage to get a land line phone number registered to a fixed address and not get caught

I’ve had this call several times. It’s a bit worrying at first until you realise that HMRC would never behave like that.

ALWAYS put the phone down, don’t press the key, it could be a premium rate line costing £££ per minute.

A few years back I was getting daily automated calls, scams and everything you could think of to the point I pulled the cord out the wall :) I registered with the telephone preference service which helped but it took some time to have any real effect. I ended up virtually making the landline phone redundant and only use my mobile now for all incoming and outgoing calls, very rare I get any nuisance calls on the landline anymore and I never answer it when it rings. I've just got used to using the mobile now and being more selective who knows my number.
