Police claiming off car theft victims for injuries sustained while chasing thieves.

Anyone else think is wrong?

I can understand claims against the thieves, but not the owners. I guess it is because the thrives don't have insurance though. Wrong, IMO :thumbsdown:
 
That is ridiculous. It's hardly any fault or responsibility of the owner if a policeman is injured doing his job. If any civil action is to be taken it should be against the thief but, like the article says, that's useless as the thief usually doesn't have the financial wherewithal to pay out, so the owner is the softer target for compensation claims. Wrong on every level.
 
I suspect this about the Police Service being political and trying to make a point about government cut-backs.

EDIT: having read the article it's individual officers making private claims. You know what will happen - your insurance premium will go up as your insurer has more and more of these claims to pay out on. There should be some law placed on the statute that says innocent victims of crime are not liable for claims made by law enforcement officers, provided they hadn't been negligent (leaving keys in car, engine running etc). Oh and the burden of proof for negligence should fall on the plaintiff not the defendant.

Edit - sadly this looks like an extension of the "something for nothing" culture that is spreading rot through our whole society. "where there's blame, there's a claim" :thumbsdown:
