If he set out to make "the best looking, lowest rolling z4 in the world", then that's subjective, and thus the majority saying it looks shite means he failed.
If he setout to make "the z4 I want", then it's not subjective and thus he achieved his goal, assuming he did get what he wanted.
However, with my experience dealing with modded cars, it's about social acceptance of your mods.
In our social circle here, I'd say he failed.
But maybe in his circle, he excelled.
however, it's still oppinion, and thus calling it the bag of shite it so clearly is, is surely perfectly acceptable?

Fair enough and true - its his car, so up to him what he does, and if he likes it, then in reality, thats all that counts.
Do I care how it looks? No, but I'm just expressing my opinion.
