Hitler dolls on sale in Ukraine

So what? I mean dont get me wrong i do not in any way condone what he did and what he stood for but getting so upset over a collectible doll? I dont exactly think it would be healthy to buy this as a toy for children but i can see why some people would want this. And i dont mean racist, fascist neo-nazis, i'm sure there are lots of normal people with an interest in that period of history who would want to add something like this to their collection.

I think the thing is that any Nazi symbol, propaganda, etc is seen as distasteful now, I suppose the dolls are, to a degree, disrespectful to the many people who lost their lives or liberty as a result of what Hitler and the Nazis did.

You are right i guess but i feel that if we dont let things go and learn from the past we cant improve ourselves and the world around us.

For example take the complicated situation in Cyprus. We got independence from the British in 1960 (1878-1960) and had the Greeks and the Turks as guarantors. There were a lot of Turkish-Cypriots on the island because Turkey occupied Cyprus since 1570 but most inhabitats were Greek-Cypriots with the first Greeks coming at around 1600BC. Anyway the Greek-Cypriots wanted to become part of Greece but the Turkish-Cypriots did not and so they started fighting. Then Turkey saw the opportunity and invaded in 1974 to "maintain the peace" and took over half of the island. And the occupation is still going on. The situation is more complex but these are the main points.

The Greek-Cypriots dont like the Turkish-Cypriots and the other way around because that's what we've been spoon fed since we're babies. We are taught that the Turks and Turkish-Cypriots killed, raped and are evil etc etc. Well the Greek-Cypriots werent exactly saints either... Both sides did a LOT of nasty things to each other. So i guess what i'm trying to say is that until we are willing to accept what happened (as there's nothing we can do to change the past) and move on we will never find a solution.

ga41, I like what you wrote about Cyprus - such a view is probably correct in most world hot-spots. A very balanced view. Now I just wished more of us felt the way you do matey!

enfield, Thank you and i really do believe that, i dont just say it. I have lots of Turkish-Cypriot and Turkish friends here in the University and i always try to get my Greek-Cypriot friends to just get over it and move on, but the fact is that as long as there are still people around that have lived through these (and any other similar) events finding a solution to the Cyprus problem will be very very difficult!

On a lighter note, yea 20ducks, she is probably just PMSing for the last few thousand years and is pissed off that everyone has chosen the wrong religion!

I vaguely remember a demarcation line in Cyprus from when I lived there some 36 years ago. Really too young to remember a whole lot, but it was a very beatiful place with extemely friendly people. Lived in Nicosia while my father was working at the US Embassy
