Just for fun.. hiring a DAX Cobra 289 replica on Saturday

Will be interesting to see how it compares to the M. Chalk and Cheese I know, but its got a 4.0 V8 and I've always wanted to drive a V8

Probably around 200-240hp but probably feels fast as its quite open.

Hope its sunny! :driving:

Awesome.. get some pics :)

They're funny looking things but it's the noise I like - how on earth do they only get 240bhp out of a 4.0 V8? American engine I assume?

Some year ago before I got my first Z4 in 2003 I was seriously looking at getting a Cobra replica with the 289 Ford V8 engine. As I recall is was rated at about 300 HP.

Yes, pictures would be good... :camera:

It's not always the horsepower in those big ole V-8s, it's the torque. (and the sound!) :driving:

I think they look awesome, one of my favorite cars since i seen badboys :P

just had a look and ur talking around 20k for a good replica

LOL +1

Although to be fair I'd just as happily settle for the Porsche in that film: "You damn right its limited. No cup holder, no back seat. Just a shiny dick with two chairs in it. I guess we the balls just draggin the fucker along"

There's a Cobra (replica I guess) in a house about 3/4 mile from mine and I can hear him start if from my back garden  - haven't had the nerve to approach the owner for a chat/run in it, as much as I'd want to.

My brother had a Cobra replica years ago when he was a motoring hack - he was given most of the parts and the kit free as he was doing an article on the build. He built it in about a month working full time on it and ended up getting to keep it (well, I mean he never gave it back and nobody noticed!!).

From memory it was more fun than my M is now but it did have shortcomings not having cupholders or a passenger footwell net.

Just goes to show you can't have it all.

Few photos...

Was a very nice 289 replica example as you can see.

I must admit, I was slightly apprehensive when I got there to hire the car as it had no roll hoops, but after 5 minutes of driving, I was hooked.

Driving away was funny as it was a lot more "rattly" than the M... one of those things you must expect from a 25 year old car but might forget until you drive one. The revcounter only went to around 5,000 rpm, but the noise and rumble of the V8 was addictive. Drove from Derbyshire upto Leeds along A roads, which took around 2:30 rather than 1:00 on the motorway, but boy was it worth it.

It had a bored out 4.0 litre Rover V8, and based on the fact that this sounded lovely, I can only imagine what a chevvy 5.7 litre would sound like in a 427 replica (drool...)

Every aspect of driving was fun - slow maneuvers were trickier without power steering etc but that was ok. It did feel more involving than the M in this respect. Junctions and going around town (10mph - 50mph) was most fun.

I thought it would be very cold with lack of side windows and rear wind deflector, but I think not having the latter actually helps as the air can't get sucked around the cabin (as it might with the windows down in the M) and the wind wasn't too bad wrapped up.

It wouldn't start the following morning, which noted would be a drawback of owning one (i.e. maintenenace requirement), but that's ok - its an old car after all, and it was far from a pristine example as you might expect from a hire car. In any case, I'm now considering buying one in the not too distant future. Maybe a 427 with a 5.7 chevvy engine.

I must admit, if I had one I might sell the M and get a more "basic" weekday car, with the Cobra for weekend thrills. However, my girlfriend was quick to point out when we got back in the M, how in comparison, its like a jet engine (!) and great in many different ways.

Both great cars. Great weekend - highly recommend it. Car hire place is "Rothwell Classics".

When I was 20 my roommate's pal had an original AC Cobra, undergoing restoration at the time so there were no carpets or finishing touches but it was 100% mechanically. A wild car to say the least. My neighbour (today) built one in his garage last year. I don't see it around much anymore, he probably got divorced or sold it. They sure sound good ....

Someone I know started to build a replica about 15-20 years ago, he put a jag v12 in his and then he left it in the corner and hasn't worked on it since
