High pitched screech when turning the car on

Noticed it the last two mornings - when I turn the car on, there is a sudden, high-pitched screech. It only seems to do it the first time from cold, as turning it off and immediately on again doesn't do anything.
Don't think it did it last night at work so could be the cold temperatures overnight?

I'll try and get a video clip of it, but any ideas from my rubbish explanation?

Aha!
Seems like we have a winner ... http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=41857

The video is exactly what is happening. Looks like starter motor. I'm under third-party warranty so I'll see if I can get it replaced for nowt.

Definitely sounds like the starter motor, possibilty not helped by the cold weather. My MG does this sometimes if the battery is getting a bit flat but I would have thought there is a more sophistocated reason on the Z.

Yep, it's the starter motor. Another common z fault I've had the pleasure of getting fixed!

I got a reconditioned Bosch one fitted for a total of about £140 I think. No screeching now :)
