High output from alternator

So... first little issue to try and sort with the new E89.

Had it in for a full service yesterday and one of the issues that came up, from what I remember of the guy saying, is the alternator is showing a high output.. like it's trying to over charge the battery. The battery is a Yigit Aku 12V 78Ah 690 CCA

If in fact it is the battery at fault, could it be..

Battery is just old and not up to it
Battery isn't the right one for this car
Battery hasn't been registered??

Any ideas appreciated!

How old is the battery?
If its old replace it first.
It probably hasn't been properly registered but the trouble is unless it is new you won't be able to reset the charging cycle to the correct one anyway.
I'd definitely think swap the battery before anything else.
I'll nip out and get the details off mine so you know the correct one to fit.

Aha, legend as always Martin!

Is there anyway to tell how old the battery is without seeing when purchased?

Think the lower capacity could be causing issues? The Start/Stop doesn't activate for instance.

You able to register these or is a proper dealer kinda thing?

Sounds like the battery is on its way out…these cars are extremely susceptible to things going wrong..sometimes badly due to poor battery condition..

Stop/start not working is a sure sign of battery state…

The who-flung-dung name of the supplier does not fill me with confidence… :tumbleweed:

Strong recommendation..get a battery from a decent supplier and ensure its coded / registered as required

Not sure with the E89. I believe if you fit another battery the same size you just tell it there's a new one, but if you change the capacity etc you need to do a bit more.
I do have various software now, but used it very little.

Battery capacity change either way..coding

Change of battery even if same size ..registration..

New battery different size..code then register..two seperate issues..

Coding tells system how much charge can be put into battery how much expected reserves

Registration tells how healthy battery is and what actions to be taken to preserve systems..

Fitted new battery and magically things start working! I think previous owner had stuck in any old thing to get the car running :headbang:

When I came to register the new one (BimmerLink app) it was still set to what it should be capacity wise, rather than what they'd put in.

Thanks as always for all the input

Excellent. So that would explain why the alternator was throwing out a bigger charge.
And now I know a man who can register/code E89 batteries.

Register yes.. thankfully didn't need to code as they helpfully put that ability in a different app that is another charge
