High Oil Consumption?

Hi All,

Ok, i suspect that my 2.5si is using a little more oil that it should do...

I've done about 1,300 miles since i've had it, and i reckon it's used around just over a litre of oil

Does that sound high? If so, what are the usual suspects when it comes to oil on these cars?
Thanks!

Not unheard of, but sounds like its at the top end of normal.....

There are a few threads on here that suggest using a thicker oil as mileage increases.

There are a lot of threads about this.

Almost all manufacturers will set an expectation of 1000 miles/litre in their handbooks. Depending upon how the car was driven from new, and how you drive as well as the types of journey you do will have a big impact on oil consumption. One thought (from a member who knows his stuff) was that if driven very gently in early life, the bores can glaze and consumption will be high. IIRC from other threads, the extremes are circa 650 miles/litre from one member, through no reported consumption between services. I'm getting around 1300 - 1500/litre and not worried about it.

Do the basic checks, no "mayo" in the filler cap, no signs of oil contamination in the coolant, no obvious signs of a leak etc and then if all OK, relax.

Thanks for your replies.

Yes there's no sign of any problems, no obvious leaks etc

I'm using 5W/30 on 68k miles - should i go for a slightly thicker oil? Maybe 5W/40?

Driving it fairly steadily with the occasional thrash!
