High Mileage Z4 3.0SI

Great replies guys, thanks.

So I need to look for a water pump replacement and a suspension refresh (or budget accordingly)

I have no problem working on my own cars, its just finding the time to do it, assuming I did it would be around £300 for the water pump and what would I be looking at with regards to suspension? Is it just rear springs I will need or are we talking front and rear, bushes and shocks as well?

Front wishbone bushes and rear trailing arm bushes are a common failure.
I did mine at 75,000 and swapped for the Powerflex ones but to be completely fair, they weren't anywhere near as bad as others that I've seen on the E46's (which use the same bushes)

If you were looking to keep the vehicle standard, just the pair of rear springs would be fine.

My Z4 3.0 si, has done 107'000 miles and it has been bullet proof. Only just had anything to do on it other than basic oil and filter changes. On 101'000 miles it had the rear springs done for the first time in its life, and only a fortnight ago, I have had to change the bushes, which I got from nfbr. If I hid my mileage from you, you would be shocked if I said my car had over 30-40k on the clock. Its pristine, rattle free (granted I de rattled it, but they make those rattles from day 1). My alternator has just started to make some noise, which I will replace, and I replaced the oil filter housing last year, although, I now realise that may have not been necessary. I have all my service records and documents from the previous owner, and its had no more than £1500 spent on it, and its a 2007. So just under £200 a year maintenance! That is cheap motoring!!!! :worshipbmw:

Usual stuff then. FSH a must, The lower the previous owners, the better. I personally would prefer a higher mileage car in good condition than one that sits there week after week and only does short journeys and 3k miles a year. These cars WANT to be driven. :driving:

I'm not sure I get why lower previous owners is better? I am the 7th owner of my Z4MR and I didn't even ask how many previous owners the car had before I bought it. The car feels a bit slutty but that's hardly the cars fault, I'm sure she is very loyal :D

It's the sort of car people experience, some people keep it and others want to experience something else so move on. It's rarely a workhorse.

Just my slant but i see low number of owners meaning the ownership period has been longer :? as such you would hope the owner spent money to maintain it correctly not only servicewise but keeping on top of scratches & scrapes :?
A car changing hands regularly might mean the odd owner thinking , ah fook it , won't be mine in a few months time so why change the brake fluid, coolant plugs etc or why have the little bumper scrape sorted etc ??
Not always the case i know but in my experience that would stand for the mostpart

Must admit I believe less owners to be a positive thing too. Unfortunately my last two Z's have both had 5 owners.

You can argue the high/low former keepers either way. You could, for instance, argue that a single owner over 10 years or so could lose interest in their car - not everyone is as fastidious as us forum members. Whereas a Zed with lots of owners may have had regular injections of ‘new car’ enthusiasm, including checks on the maintenance/service schedule, and lots of waxing and polishing.
Edit: I'm not saying I would pic a 5 owner car over a 1 owner car, however I wouldn't be put off checking out a Zed simply because it had a high number of owners. Mine has 2 former keepers btw.

My z4 3.0 just clocked 151k and still pulls like a train. Its well looked after. had b12 kit fitted, New gear box & diff oil smoothed out the gear change. Recently had coolant leak from crack in thermost housing (common issue). Apart from some idiot scratching my door the other week its all good.

I'd just wait until a lower mileage car comes along
Not everyone can afford low mileage cars some people have to buy a car with a high mileage

in fairness 5k for a lowish milage z4 will be the least of their concerns when it comes to running costs if something does need changed.
It's not exactly a car for people lacking a bit of disposable income

Mines about to hit 100k and will be in better shape than most with much less milage, depends what the last owner was like (for any car)
Milage i don't think makes much odds these days.
