Is that a correct assumption? If a car has done a lot of miles, the engine and various bearings have rotated a higher percentage of their duty cycle. Proper servicing will maximise the lifetime but ultimately it's wearing out.
It's fair to say that high mileage vehicles will most likely need work like bearing replacements sooner than a lower mileage car, the question is what duty cycle has the car been designed to. The Mercedes taxi I travelled in during my last trip to Portigal had done just short of 500,000km and sounded mechanically fine. The interior however left a lot to be desired...
