It's certainly possible, and I know a couple of e34 M5 owners who've had it done, so they now have HIDs on dip, main & fog. You can feel the heat from 10m away 
Shouldn't cost more than £250 fitted for 4th/5th generation stuff, but if you do it yourself make sure you get them from a reputable source as some ebay sellers are passing stuff off that's not safe or of a lower spec than they claim.

But are they using HID fog lamps for there intended purpose or additional all weather driving lights? My experience of ultra bright fog lights, used in foggy conditions, is that you just get more reflected light back to the driver which can be a distraction in difficult conditions.
They both live in rural parts, and use foglights a lot to help them see the raised verges and edges of narrow country lanes. They've also used yellow lenses instead of the whites to make them look more 'continental'. They only have a very short 'throw' due to the angle that the lens imparts, so that the foglight only fills in the metre or so that the other lights don't.AlanJ said:
I was offered the full conversion at 'mates rates' for £500 for the set, but I decided to just go for the main beam conversion which were fine for my use of mainly night-time motorway, dual-carriageway and fast A-roads.
