Mine is the same as Gwest car - extended lights as well and no red light

I have a couple of lights like the red ones in my x6.
In the x6 I think they mihht be on all the time but are only really visible when it's dark, so maybe they come on when the headlights are switched on.
The main one I can think of in the x6 is in the headlining right above the gear selector giving you a slightly illuminated area.

Mystery solved. The red lights come on with the side lights. I’m assuming mine came on for a few seconds when I unlocked the car as it was a certain darkness in my garage. Anyway turn your headlight switch to side lights to see if they come on.

Probably be seen as sour grapes as my car doesn't have them, but surely this is a desperate clutching at straws by BMW to increase the price of a car by hiding a light behind the seat?

I knew the white one was there just never really ever saw due to the seat position

I have orange ambient light there, as well as white when door or cabin light on.
Also orange in footwells.

Only because i fitted them there, plus i did same in the door storage pockets.
Also added a white light that comes on when i open the pockets.

Sour grapes indeed, Martin. Just because you are not in the "didn't know these lights were there, now I do" club there is no need to be bitter.

I noticed mine a while ago (yes red and white). I wondered if the red ones were something to do with the alarm system; ie protects the "ski hatch" via a laser system, thus cutting off any intruders' hands. I thought it was only standard on Saudi spec cars.

Reminds me of the "didn't realise there was an air recirc button on the steering wheel" thread. These E89s just keep on giving!

Well looks like it wasn’t a photographic artefact ..(although the first picture didn’t look like a quality shot)

So it looks like there’s a clever unit that feeds from a box to two light units..the FRM module looks like it picks up the headlights on and off and then some how then switches the ‘red LED part on..you can see the two parts of the head unit in these pictures..
