I know there was a massive thread concerning HID kits etc. Just wondered if anyone has fitting the slimline ballasts up inside the arches, and if so how?

Also do i need extra bulb carriers?

Cheers Chris :)

I would love to know some more info about the slimline kits - anyone got some pictures and/or a link to some?

I did have a set from hids direct, but did not need bulb holders as they were aftermarket depo headlights.

Keep seeing bulb holders on eBay, but they look poop!

Chris, have you got any pictures of your HID's fitted? I would like to know if anyone has some pictures of the slimline HID kits :)

What on the E46? As have not got any on the Z4 YET. Will have, just got to see if i need the adaptors, but will do that tomorrow under the amazing hole in the wheel arch :D

Although I hate aftermarket HID's for a whole slew of reasons if I were to fit them then with slimline ballasts I'd locate those inside the headlight.

That would eliminate all the usual issues of locating the ballast in the dry, routing a HD lead and drilling holes in the case. Loads of room inside the light as I fitted transformers for CCFL AE in mine.

Yeah i took the headlight apart (well the back off) the other day to stick my side light bulbs in. And there is quite a lot of room in there. I know people dont like HIDs much, but apart from the possibility of blinding other road users i think they are great. BMW std headlights are pretty poor, and i cant see much at night, and im only using std BMW bulbs, not these xenon look ones which dont give off any light!

Cant wait to fit them now, well as its getting darker earlier i need them :D

yeh the slimline ones will have to be a must - has anyone got a link to them on ebay or other store? I did upgrade my bulbs to the Philips Xtreme ones and there really was no difference. The only difference was adjusting the trim on the headlights so they shine higher up.

Do you think the slimline ones would be easy to fit?

They will be, as i have seen both and the slimline ones i had, and will get again were quite small. Same size as a cigarette packet, but thinner, and shorter  Well not the same size then

Very easy to fit, just not that easy to locate. Last time i used velcro, as then you can easily take them off etc.

velcro to the back of the headlight casing or inside the actual housing? You got a link Chris to the slimline ones? :D

Well this was on my e46, but will do the same to these. So inside the headlight casing, or on the removable panel that is on the back of the headlight

Will get a link to the ones i bought :D Need to find them anyway, and they are the same as HID's sell just cheaper

Nice one Chris, I look forward to the linkypoos :) esp with the nights drawing in now, I really think HID's are going to be the way forwards. The standard lights on the beats are just poo compared to the xenons I had on my old Mini Cooper S

How about these Chris, any joy - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230441201185&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

These are the ones i had before and was very happy with, They dont say slimline, as there are some really small ballasts now, but they are slim ones

And for light output 4300k is the best, and 6k is very good. 8k is getting worse, and i would only go 4300-6000k to get the best out of them. 6k look cool too :D

But as i say i will check for holder and see if we need them

There's very little room between the rear of the light and the back cover. When you get the cover off you'll see a lot more space on the lower edge and a convenient place against one of the internal mouldings.

I'd also disuade from mounting on the rear cover as it's a real wriggle job to get on and off without adding more trouble with a ballast on it.

Thanks for the link Chris, on the listing it states that it's compatible with H7 bulbs so I should imagine that they are just a plug and play swap? £70 odd for the set might be worth having a punt on - are these the ones that you have used before?

There are so so many different HID kits out there, they can't all be the same quality?

Yeah they are the ones i had before

Not sure about a direct fit, as you need to secure them in, like the old lights were with a wire clip thing. And i think the Z4 just a twist in clip. As on ebay they are selling them for a tenner, but need to have a look. Just not had the chance, as just got back from work
