HID Kit

I still haven't bought a Zed yet but hoping to do so soon. As far as the debate Halogen over Xenon, it seems a no brainer but I'm not sure it would put me off getting a car if it had everything else I wanted.

I was looking at HID kits and the new MOT laws and so thought I would post link to another site discussing here (seventh post down): VOSA Email.

It looks like unless the HID is less than 2000 lumens (unlikely) they need Self Levelling and washers. Below that Lumen they don't. MOT centres are unlikely to know how bright your lights are so may pass it but they are still illegal (if the police stop you they may give you points).

So what are those of you with HID Kits going to do? Remove or Risk it? I think I will go for brighter Philips Halogen bulbs if i get a Halogen Z4.

In answer to your Q's, I'm going to risk it. Partly as I've been following info elsewhere online but have been waiting for definitive info from VOSA on this - think I might e-mail that person at VOSA directly myself to get it in writing! And partly because worst-case if they fail it, it's only a small job to reinstate halogens for a test then change back again. I'm not concerned that my headlights are any more or less annoying than factory HIDs, and am confident they don't annoy other road users.

Oh, and I've no idea how bright mine are but if I use my 700-lumen rated mountain-bike lights as a reference point, my headlights are a good bit more than that...

As you allude to, if a Z4 you're looking at has all the spec you want I wouldn't get hung up on not having factory xenons. I didn't.

Thanks for posting the direct link, I tried to work out how to do it but need to do a little more homework! In fact I think I've just worked it out :D

i was told that the lenses on the z4 get rid of the glair so its not much of a problem, also its a sports car so police will expect HID's to be fitted

Have a read of the MOT document I link to in this thread:

You aren't going to fail an MOT with after market HID's on a z4. The beam pattern is completely fine (I've had a look myself with MOT equipment.

As long as everything is set up you shouldn't fail. I'm certainly no expert, but as I don't think MOT stations check the brightness of the bulbs they will assume the car is legal (ie has self levelling & washers fitted if required, ie bulb above 2000 lumens). As such, if they are not fitted they will presume the bulb is below 2000 lumens and therefore legal.

It doesn't mean they are legal but I suspect most will pass an MOT. Chrisj900, you're probably right, as long as the beam is set up correctly then the police are unlikely to stop you and unless they know what they are looking for (manual light height adjuster knob), they wouldn't know if you didn't have self levelling.
