Hey everyone,

I just bought a 2.0 on eBay. I think it’s in transport mode (or has some other rough idle problem that affects heated seats, rear de mister and air conditioning) and is in need of some TLC.

Not planning on changing much, it needs cruise control and I have to figure out how to fix a scratch on the steering buttons.

Anyway I’ll go away and read the rest of the newbie section now :)

Hi and welcome.

There is loads of useful information on here - hopefully you'll find the answers, but if not just ask.

Welcome to Z4 ownership and the forum, lots of info here and people very helpful. Oh, photo’s of the new purchase?

Welcome to the forum - don't forget some pics  .
Best thing to do is to get a code reader to figure out what's causing limp mode (if that's what's happening) then come back here for any assistance with next steps. (There are also members that may be in your area with code readers (usually Carly) that will help read the fault codes and do any coding you may want - there's also a thread on members with Carly - check it out).
Not sure of the actual steering wheel buttons, but the button surrounds are a common area for scratching and there are several threads on here about removing and refinishing them.

Welcome to he board. :) Enjoy your research there is much knowledge on here.

Oh and be sure to come back with some pictures. :D

Hi and welcome - I'm guessing that since its a 2.0 its a roadster; well done

did anyone mention photos yet? :worthless:

Thanks for the welcome guys!

I found another post from a ‘trader’ on here posting about my car. I’m in the fortunate position of having bought it from him for the price he said he gave for it as a trade-in.

So far:

Carly said there was nothing wrong other than an open circuit on the heated seats, but the A/C and rear de mister weren’t working and the idle was rough.

I took it to my favourite BMW specialist (BMerc in Barnet, north London) who told me:
They’ve sorted the rough idle
Fixed the AC and rear demister
Heated seats need further investigation.

They are doing the cruise control retrofit for me.

It passed MOT with no problems, but apparently needs new brake discs and pads soon, so they are sorting that.

Interestingly it has the wrong oil level sensor on it so they are fixing that too.

There was a scratched up engine under tray left in the boot. I think someone drove over a bump too quickly and bodge repaired it (maybe this ‘trader’) but it’s in great condition other than that and has full BMW history.

Anyway all that might sound boring and lame so here’s a pic :)

Welcome to the forum and Z4 ownership. Looks a nice shade of blue and well done on posting the photo’s.

Thought I’d add another photo, parked alongside my mini!

It’s back on the road now, mostly fixed but I have a couple of questions :)

There’s a kind of whining/grinding sound coming from somewhere in the engine bay. Doesn’t affect the way it drives but sounds quite intrusive. Are they all like that? You hear it mostly between about 10-30mph after which wind noise takes over.

Also my heated seats briefly worked but now when I turn them on the 3 lights come on for about a second and then they go off. I can try this a few times and after maybe 3 attempts it’ll give up and the lights won’t come on again until I restart the car...

Thanks everyone!

Hi nice photos
Could the grinding noise be the discs and pads as you have been told that they need changing

Great photos, but your Z4 makes your Mini look very tall! :o

Mind you an R56 Mini is still a great drive, so that looks like a great pairing.
