Having problems with sticky steering on my 2005 Z4.

Looking for a not to expensive repair , looks like you can change position of the eccentric ring on the power steering thus giving some extra clearance on the internal parts. High ambient temperature or engine heat from being parked after a long run is the cause of the problem.

Access is an issue to get to the torq bolts which hold the eccentric ring in position.

Is there any other options which should be considered and can anyone recommend a garage to repair the fault.

With the right tools and fully functioning vertebrae it's a fairly simple job.
1. Remove the lower column shroud and the footwell panel.
2. Adjust the column to it's lowest position and furthest back towards the seat.
3. Mark across the ring and the motor to estasblish your datum line.
4. Loosen the two torx bolts just a tad.
5. Tap the bottom of the ring away from you, towards the bulkhead, by about 5-8mm.
6. Tighten the bolts and test drive before you refit the panels.
7. Tweak a bit more if needed.

NB. Access to the torx head bolts is difficult with a socket or cranked spanner. I use an 8mm bihex ratchet ring spanner. Fits well and is flat so easily gets onto the bolt heads.

Thanks for the quick reply to my Z4 issue. I removed the large lower column shroud but did not see a further panel that could be removed ??
