Hi, new member, first z4; advice welcome

Hi All,

Just purchased a 2006 BMW Z4 coupe, e86, automatic (unfortunately), 113k miles.

Started creating a parts list; I'm in the, 'fix it, before it breaks,' camp. Though, it did come with a dying headliner. I doubt anyone is surprised. Then I realized, I don't know what type of owner I want to be. The OEM purist, OE is ok, or make it fit my tastes? No matter what I decide. The next owner will get a well maintained Z4.

My first decision is the headliner. Should I re-glue the headliner with original fabric? Try matching the color with new fabric, or choose another color?

Welcome Vorey πŸ™‚
You will find the answers to pretty much any question relating to E86's here. The owners of them are a deeply knowledgeable bunch (of which I am neither πŸ˜‰).
If you can get the headliner sorted, most other things will be easy in comparison!

No advice here, other than I also sit in the fix it before it breaks camp! It’s easier and more enjoyable in the long run.

Great colour and wheel combo btw πŸ‘

Welcome

There is an aftermarket material very similar (if not the same) with the padding for the headliner. Have a look on the E46 forums, and you'll find the details. This would be my go to option, personally

Just be careful - finding another headliner will be a challenge (ask me how I know...)

When you remove the headliner, there is a plastic clip at the back, in the middle. Do not pull down on this. It is about Β£45 (GBP) (or whatever that concerts too for you), and only available from BMW.

Instead, unhook the a/b/c pillars. Remove the door and boot rubbers and the sun visors. Now that clip is all that is left holding it up. Slide the headlining down and forward, towards the dashboard, and the clip should slide off the headliner. Then use a tool to gently remove the clip from the gripper in the ceiling

Thanks all for the warm responses.TriggerFish; I took your advice, and you timed the response well. I know VW well and came prepared with plastic pry tools. Your right, that T slide out clip is a weak design. 28769.jpg

Hi and welcome to the forum from a serial E86 owner.

I'm so jealous of how clean the front of your car looks without a licence plate!
