Hi guys, few questions

First off hi and thanks for having me :D in looking to upgrade from my Z3 to an e89. I've seen a couple of cars I'm interested in. First is an 09 2.5 with low mileage s drive. The second is a 2012 2.0 msport. What's the 2.0 engines like? As reliable as the 6 cylinder? Enough power? Or is the lower mileage 2.5 the safer /better option. Thanks

Hi and welcome.

Loads will be along soon with more knowledge than myself - I just purchased the 2.5 as I wanted that straight six noise as I drive, I believe the 2.0 is better on emissions and fuel on paper. but never driven one I cant comment.

I just drove 30 miles after I collected my car (tonight) and achieved 40mpg with 20 miles of m/way and the remainder on a roads so really impressed as my Alfa diesel only achieved 42 on the same journey

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I've only had E86s but I'm assuming the 2.5 you are thinking of will be a 23i because that did have a 2.5 litre N52 engine.

I'm on my 4th N52 engine in my 3 Series, mainly because I really like them and can't find RWD anywhere else! But I've never had a 4 cylinder 2 litre BMW turbo so can't offer any comparisons.

However I'm sure I've read on here that the 18i, 20i and 28i all use the same engine just with different mapping. A 20i probably offers similar performance to a 23i, but a 28i or remapped 20i will probably compare well with a 30i.

It probably depends whether you prefer the mid-range grunt of a turbo or the soundtrack of a straight 6!

And I noticed you've posted twice so you might want to go into your other post and delete it or you might get replies in 2 different places!

Too late! The OP now has 2 threads running - don't know if the Mods can combine them possibly?

Anyway good to know you have now collected your Z4 "Ole gits rule".

I'm on my 5th straight 6 petrol BMW and they have all easily managed better than 30mpg over a total of nearly 60K miles, but that doesn't include any commuting (or my current M Coupe which does like a drink)!

Haha newbies! Err how do I delete post? Thanks

I don't think you can now someone has replied on the other one - you'll probably just need to read both!

Cheers guys. Congrats on your new purchase ole gits rule. May the wind blow through your hair for many years to come.
Although, your name tag may suggest that hair maybe a thing of the past. Anyhoo enjoy :D

Thanks, I bought the car nearly 4 weeks ago but had some issues that the garage could not resolve, it went to the stealers where the first available slot was 2.5 weeks away.

I am not that old (well in my head anyway) and I have hair - not all of it but some and a mullet may be feasible after this lockdown :)
