Hi Gang,

My Saab 9-3 convertible sadly passed over last week, and since I've just bought the girlfriend something sensible (a 1 series diesel) I thought I was L'oreal enough to treat myself to something saucy... I got this pre-facelift 2.5l manual fixer upper for not a lot:

The nice fella I bought it from knew it needed a lot of help so was very sensible. Now I've had it a couple of days it's actually in better nick than I thought, a lot of it was just really dirty. Like I thought loads of the button markings had faded/rubbed off but they were just covered in dirt, so hopefully this weekend I'll get to know her by cleaning every inch, and see where I am.

It defo needs: 4 wheels and tyres, a big dent sorting in nsf wing, some chips away type stuff, sport seats refurb, kick plates, badges, a few bits of plastic interior, roof clean/reproof and a proper service.

After that as pocket money permits I'll also change to a stubby, add hid's, add cruise (hopefully I've had a result and not need a loom), delete the back box and relocate the roof pump.

So, Hi, that's me, I'm off to look for some wheels and boots.
Andy

Thanks a lot guys, appreciate it.

By the way I see what you all mean about runflats!! :-o When I was bringing it home I was doing 'a certain' speed on the A12 and hit some grooves.... Woah!!! My sphincter was popping like a two-stroke!!! :-o

Hi welcome to the forum, it’s a shame when they get neglected but I’m sure you will give it plenty of TLC

Welcome to the forum. I would get a new wing in the same colour personally and keep the whippy aerial

Hi and welcome aboard - it's always good to see an unloved car getting brought back to its best!

If you don't have the wiring for Cruise, forum member "srhutch" can make up the section of loom you need for sensible money.

Unless you plan to move the roof motor yourself "bowser134" (aka Ross) in Hook, Hants is the nearest person to you for that job. After 15 years at Sytner he has just started up on his own:- https://www.rbmhampshire.co.uk/

There are 2 topics that generate multiple posts on here, and you've found the 1st one - the whippy/stubby debate! The other is the Roadster/Coupe one.

Good luck getting your Z4 sorted.

I really appreciate the warm welcome folks. :)

I dunno about you but I love buying cars like this, as long as they're sound underneath. :) A couple of hours with grease wipes and the interior is transformed.

Are wings around?? I'll have a look, thanks for the heads up.

Thanks, I'll go with those, I appreciate you saving me the time. I'm happy to put in elbow grease and get dirty but anything lecky or techy I'd rather drive miles for a grown up to do it.

Wheels and tyres first for the MOT next week. :-?

Welcome to Z4 ownership and the forum. I believe the pre facelift cars were pre wired for a lot of the accessories so the wiring for cruise control may be there. The car’s are fairly easy to work on so enjoy the process.

Thanks Fella.

Yeah I already like how easy it is to get round everything under the bonnet. Also plenty of space on the front for a short snooze. :D

I owe you a beer mate, you've saved me hundreds. Found a nearly perfect wing I'm picking up Saturday for £120. Looks like just lots of bolts too so I'm going to change them over myself. I didn't even think of looking at doing that.

Separate note, I'm not deleting the back box after all, watched a video of a kid on YouTube who'd done it.... he was really happy... I wouldn't be. Different strokes. :)

I don't blame you - I've heard a 3.0Si with no back box and it is loud. Probably great now and again, but I wouldn't want to do a long journey!

Good news then, do a search of the forum, you should be able to find details of wing removal. I know the rear wing has a hidden bolt, buy not sure about the front wings

Thanks, I've read a couple of threads on here about it and watched a video and am 95% confident.

Thanks mate.

Got a few bits of the restore to health done this week.

I've talked about getting these new 294 wheels on in another thread, turns out it's been lowered badly and needs new front springs but here's the wheels on:

I've also changed the dented wing, which I'll detail in another thread so others can do it. Easy-ish for a proper amateur like me:

And I replaced some missing trim, back badge and passenger kick plate. I always find it surprising how tiny bits of missing trim can make the whole car look so untidy.

And I know this is a contentious one but swapped to a stubby. :)
