Hi folks

My son and his girlfriend have just bought a 7 year old z4 2.5l. As is normally the case dad is the resident mechanic etc. For that reason I am logging in here to pick your brains. Hope that is OK.

hi bob & welcome, being 7 years old is it a 2.5si ? It should be the n52 engine - either a 177(like mine) or the 2.5si (217bhp)

Funny Jamie they were thinking about the same, probably next year. I have asked them to get a cover for it as they don't have a garage, big back garden but no garage.

Welcome aboard - perhaps some of us non-mechanical owners could be picking your brains too :)

As a newbie I am getting totally confused about all this talk of BHP. I have a 2005 2.5 SE which the book suggests has 192 BHP so why on earth would a slightly newer version have a lower BHP, presumably its still 6 cylinders. But then again mine has the sports button which others on the forum have suggested would make it an si. The log book says it is an SE but then these catagorisations by DVLA are often completely wrong. The badge on the side of the cars says 2.5i.
So, why on earth would anyone contemplate buying a slightly newer but less BHP version of the car. Can anyone clarify all this as my head is starting to hurt.

Mike, I was also baffled & wasn't even aware they did this!

however my conclusion is

In the facelift they dropped the 2.2i from the Z range; so presume they offered a 2.5i in 2 power putouts - the 177(to replicate the 2.2i) and the 2,5si (217) to be the new full fat 2.5 version

Jamie
As you say all very confusing. However I have rechecked my log book and it says 2.5i SE. Presumably as it was registered in 2005 that will make it 192bhp. Still finding it hard to grasp why a short time later they would then having done away with the 2.2 manufacture a car with both lower and higher BHPs. You would think they would have retained the 192BHP as the lower spec. 177 BHP cannot have done much to their sales figures.

Nah. I understand it as the 170bhp 2.2i was replaced with a 177bhp 2.5i (maybe for young drivers who want to experience the 6 pot) then 217 replacing the 192 in your pre-face m54 engined car :)

ok so, now my head is mush :dizzy: - we need someone to post one of those lists showing all the various models by date and all the engine sizes and power outputs . . .

2003-2005 m54 2.2i 170bhp
2003-2005 m54 2.5i 192bhp
2004-2009 n46 2.0 150bhp
2003-2005 m54 3.0 231bhp
2006-2009 n52 2.5 177bhp
2006-2009 n52 2.5 214bhp (Si)
2006-2009 n52 3.0 265bhp (Si)

Then the M car
