Hi everybody,

Thinking of changing my car for a Z4 3.0i. I currently have a VX220 and want something a bit more luxurious but still gives the thrills.
Apart from a Boxter S (too many expensive probs) the Z4 is the only option that stands out. I luv the styling of the car and the way BMW engines deliver power.

Ive picked up that the hood motor is a common fault as is the rear springs...these dont worry me! Is there anything else I should be looking for?
Probably be going for a 2003 with about 50-60k.

Any pointers/advice appreciated.

Cheers,

S

Thanks for the pointer!

Thats a great looking car. Is there much difference in performance between the 2.5 and the 3.0?

If you're in Yorks/Lincs then I'm doing a show-around my car for someone else on the board this week. It's an 03, 56k miles, SMG box, 3.0i. Let me know if you want a look.

Make sure you read that thread carefully!

Performance is around 0.7/8 to 60 and a stronger pull towards motorway ish speeds. Fuel economy difference is negligible; both are six pot engines.

Thanks for the reply and the offer but Im in the Glasgow area.

Probably still go for the 3.0L!

Hello, I am selling just such on Ebay and I stay in Bathgate, near Edinburgh!
Regards Jim.

My choice was/would be the 3.0 for 1st time owner(u having had a decent/performance-wise/car prior).
As for perf,0-60,the 2.5 is circa 7seconds(depending on age) and the 3.0 is 5.7/5.9(pre/post facelift),so a noticeable diffirence, and the reason i went for the 3.0,as my prev car, leon cupra, did 0-60 in under 7s,so 2.5 not a step up for me. :driving:

Hello and welcome :D

I didn't look at anything but the 3.0... well actually I didnt look at any other cars

Thanks for all the replies folks. Ive PM'd EdButler (hope thats the correct person) to get his views on the change from a VX.
I still need to sell the VX but hopefully that wont take too long!

Cheers,

S

Hey and Welcome to the forum!!

You asked if i had any regrets, absolutely not, however they are a different kettle of fish entirely! Whereas the VX was amazing laugh out loud fun to drive in the dry, it was truly scary in the wet. The Z4 is just an excellent all rounder and very comfy to boot (and doesn't leak! ;)). The Z4 is one of the most controllable cars you can get on the limit with decent tyres and i love it. Just make sure you find one with all the options you want!

One thing you will find unusual though is the seating position. As you sit so far back, the car feels very strange at first, but you soon get used to it. You obviously loose a lot of steering feel also, but its not as bad as many PAS cars. The 3.0i 6er is a fantastic engine and would probably just beat an NA on the 1/4 mile thanks to its top end grunt. I also amazingly get better MPG despite more power, cylinders, weight etc! Insurance on the BMW was about £150 more for me at the age of 26.

This forum is also fantastic... Not as many modders or techies on here, but that just goes to show how well polished the Z4 is as a car. The Meets/Runs are also great :D

Ohh... and i'll be getting another VX as a second/third car and Harrop SC'ing it in the not too distant future! :driving:

Thanks for your honesty it greatly appreciated! I did get to view and sit in Z4 at the weekend and my first thought was that I was sitting in the wheel house of an oil tanker (right at the back) but you are correct, it is a totally different kettle of fish and thats is exactly what I said to the salesman. You cant really compare the two!
The added luxury and power is very appealing to me at the moment. The VX is my 2nd car or weekend toy and I was thinking of going down the SC route or even throttle bodies but it takes a lot of cash to do either properly!
The next step for me is to organise a test drive. Theres one in a garage just outside Glasgow (im in East Kilbride) so I'll go over at the weekend!

Wish you hadnt said your getting another VX, makes me think I could be missing it if I change :(

Cheers

Haha dont say that, no its for 3 reasons really...
1. I still have lots of friends in the club so would like to get involved again.
2. I love working on cars, but i just wouldn't mess around with the Z4. I used to take apart something on the VX every weekend!
3. I want to re-build a crashed one back to life for the experience as i know them inside and out.

Ive had the Zed almost 2 happy years and never regretted it once... There will be more to come too. :driving:

I'll try and not let the "what if" come into it. The VX is a great car..no doubt about it!!! but im a great believer in experiencing all aspects of motoring and a BMW sports car is something worth trying!

Watch this space.

Well, had the test drive the other night and Im very impressed!!!! :D
Although I didnt really get a chance to go through the revs in every gear Im really impressed with the power delivery and the sound of the six pot.
Very smooth car to drive. I was surprised about how agile and controllable the car feels which is a major plus!
I now need to get my car sold and find a Z4 with the right colour, interior, toys combo........cant wait!!

I suggest you look for a UK car with full BMWSH. Having just spent over £2000 on mine over the last 10 months on repairs alone :o (new hood motor, two airbag ecu's, two rear springs etc) I have been told by BMW Customer relations that they will not even contemplate any out-of-warranty (goodwill) support for imports, or cars without a full BMWSH. I found it interesting that they didn't deny that these are indeed design issues. Any lawyers out there who'd like to consider a class action?
