Hi all !

Soooo, unfortunately I haven't got a Z4 yet. I've been searching around this forum & auto traders ( I'm from Belgium btw ) to get a bit of information even though I would probably buy the car around the summer. ( hehe Cabrio weathaaaa ! )

Now i'm only 20 years old, and I have a wonderful job. I'm a salesmen for the brands Nissan, Opel and Chevrolet. Which means that whenever the day is over, I just pick a car that's availbable at the evening and go home with it. I've got a decent salary so I thought : Perfect situation to get a weekend/fun car !

I'll only use it for the weekends whenever it's a pretty good weather.

Even tho I've just said cabrio weather, I'm still hesitating between the roadster or the coupe. Unfortunately, the coupe is only available with a 3l V6 engine .. Now that's good and that's not good imo. Good, cause I'd love to drive it, especially with the 265 bhp u get .. But it's my insurance I'm a bit afraid.

U see, in Belgium ( don't know about the UK ) whenever you are beneath 25 years old, they let u pay a bit more for every kW u exceed .. Whenever you're above 68 kW ( which is very low .. ) you already pay a bit more per month or a year. If I go for the 3 litre engine, i'll probably ruin myself with my insurance, unless I put my father as main driver and me as a second driver. ( IF my dad wants to .. Not really a big fan of my buying a car like the Z4 especially with the 3l engine )

Or else I'll just buy the roadster, still have fun with it. But that'll be the 2.0 150 bhp, and I guess that's enough ? Is it enough to sometimes go to the mountains ( wonderful roads there ) and when it goes uphills, you don't go like : ' CMOOOON, where's the power ? '

Heh, just wondering and I hope you'll help me, cause I really love this car and I'm like 99% sure I'll buy one whenever it's the summer.

Thank you !

There is a few members on here that have the 2.0 or the 2.2 six pot . Both i am sure are very capable cars , i think the latter is better but iam sure someone with better knowledge of them will be along soon. Oh by the way welcome to the forum.

Welcome.

I think you would be fine with a 2.0 or a 2.2, ok so they don't have quite the kick in the pants of the bigger boys but the go round the corners just as well and they do go round the corners very well :D . I'd recomend the 2.2, the extra running costs will be very little but you get a sweet, smooth 6 cylinder engine, the best thing to do is go out and try both befor you buy, your the one who's going to live with it.

The other thing to think about is the extra's. BMW are very good at not giving a lot away with the basic model but there is a long options list. Will you be happy with a newer basic one or a slightly older one with more toys to play with.

Welcome, I have had my FL 2.0 Z4 since November, and can honestly say I am very happy with it. Ok, so it doesn't have the kick of the larger engined Zs, but will nip along very well if kept on the boil, and is a blast on a twisty road.
To put it into perspective, I also run an Octavia VRS 170CRTDI, which flies, and the Z's 0-60 is similar, and more fun.
I think you would get on just fine with the 2.0 or 2.2, the best thing is just to go and try one. :D

Okay, well thank you for your advices.

I'm probably gonna try the 3.0 and the 2.2. So the 2.0 is not a 6 cilinder engine, but the 2.2 is ?

Don't be put off by the fact that the 2.0 is only 4 cylinder.
Sometimes less is more, and it is still relatively smooth.

Okay. Well anyways I'm probably gonna try the 3.0 like I've said and the 2.2.

But my girlfriend would prefer the 2.0 cause she prefers the looks of the face lifted z4. Hehe :P, sometimes u gotta satisfy the girlfriend haha. So I'm still gonna try all three probably and see with my insurance.

Welcome to the forum

The 3.0 is a straight six, not v6 :) as are the 2.5 and 2.2

Straight six is a perfectly balanced engine, both primary and secondary balance. Each up motion of the piston had a corresponding down motion from its corresponding piston (primary balance). Each weight on the crankshaft has a corresponding counter weight in a different position to maintain secondary balance. That's just my summary. Have a quick look on Wikipedia or Google for a proper explanation....

Straight 6 is smoother than V6, very smooth power delivery and flat torque curve

Adamski, you have a way of putting things that is gifted - I never knew this, and actually understood every word of that

foohQ - welcome :D

If your girlfriend likes the facelift, try a 2.5l too. My advice would also be to involve your Dad in your search. If he likes cars, and also gets a chance to test drive them (as he is MUCH more experienced than you  ) then the Power Of The Z may win him round to your side :D

...of course that could backfire and he bans you to get one himself, but I don't know your Dad. Obviously :P

Wow thanks ! I know see what's the difference.

So the 2.5 engine is the facelifted then?

My dad.. Not really sure about it tho, he's a huge fan of cars also, but he's more for security. And always complains about taxes and insurance. :P So That's why I would try to insure it myself.

The 2.5 would be on the better side of the middle if you ask me. When I set about to buy a zed the 2.5 was the bottom line engine wise. So I found one well speced so went for the one I have now. A friend of mine has the 3l and yes its faster but not by that much that you feel slow in the 2.5. I think the 3l just does everything a bit earlier due to more torque.
