Hi All! Z4 3.0i questions

Just dropping by to say hello.

Handing the company car in soon and am looking for a daily car for myself. Been debating the Z4, 350Z or Honda S2K. A friend had the 350 and said try and avoid them as they are cheaply made inside, the S2K just doesn't seem all that 'special', so I'm sort of left with the Z4.

Just a quick question really regarding the cars, specifically it will be a 3.0i, anywhere up to about £7.5k as I'd prefer to keep my other car and not sell it to fund this!

Are there any specific 'quirks' I should be looking for? I'm all good with checking mechanical aspects (engine/services/springs etc) and general wear and tear (and whether it matches the mileage), but there any unique issues surrounding this car/model?

Welcome to the forum. Roof motor failures and broken springs are two common faults. If you grab a 2006 onwards model, some of the 6 cylinder engines suffer from hydraulic valve adjuster issues. It's not that common, but worth looking out for. There's a forum FAQ which should answer most of your questions :thumbsup:

You made the right choice with the Z4 IMO. S2000 is ok when driving flat out, the rest of the time it can be boring, due to lack of torque. The Datsun is great in speed terms, but for the running costs you'd be better with a Z4 ///M. Plus the convertible Datsun ate too many pies, which really slows it down, and it looks rather ugly :(

350Z was on my list at the time of buying my Z4 :)

I like quite a few Nissans. My mate has a 300bhp 200SX, see post in the road trip section... it's an impressive machine.

Just don't like the styling/concept of the Juke :)

( ps - am I still on your **** list? :lol: )

Say "I think Jukes are cool" 10 times and you're off the list. :D

Back on topic, I think with your budget you are looking at a pre-facelift Z4 hence the issue mentioned about roof motors is of greater worry, as they were better sealed on the facelift models.
 
Right, now the mission is to persuade the old man to like the Z4 more than the 350, as at the moment it's the other way around and it's only fair to let him have a say as it's his 'weekend' car while I'm driving my VX.
 
Oh, one more question, what is the wind noise like with the soft top up? I would obviously assume it's not fantastic with it down.
 
Ignore all the comments about the roof motor being fixed, or 'improved' on the newer model (facelift) as I'm confident if you do a search on the forum there will be just as many facelift failed roof motors as prefacelift

The key is if the car has been garaged or has a Hardtop for the winter months

Mine has had the above and is one of the oldest cars on the forum (sept 2003) no roof motor issues (yet...)

I was considering a 350Z, but the interior is simply awful.

My only quality complaint with the Z4 would be the doors, they don't have the solid thud that the BMW badge would suggest.

You will probably find if you get a 350Z that the strengthening support bar running across behind the seats, seriously restricts what you can put into the boot. At least the Z4 has a resonable space for putting stuff in the back.
 
The boot in the E85 Z4 is very impressive.

Popped out for a quick video shoot with a Canon XF305, Sony Z7, Canon 5D MkII, Miller tripod, flexifill and some car cleaning gear. Not bad for a two-seater!
