hi,

i have a z4 2.2 with 28000km (17500 miles), used car, bought with 24000Km and from the beginning i have hesitation, cough problems when i pressed (smooth) the gas pedal until 3000rpm (not always, sometimes), but if i pressed hard i have no problems.

the stealer have changed the clutch and the flywheel because the clutch vibrates a little, and part of the problem was solved ... the rest they don't now what is the problem.

- the idle is 600rpm, no problems
- when i touch the gas pedal slowly the revs go up, then down and finally up (sometimes the up and down is quick, other times is like stages)
- when i take off the foot from the gas pedal, the revs go a little up, then finally down

strange behavior but when i drive in the city .... I have so much shame

i don't now if is a problem, but if a release the clutch and don't give it any gas the car goes by it self. With a idle of 600 rpm's, this is normal ?????

i only use BP Ultimate 98 gas

please help me, thanks :D

I'm suspecting you are having the well known "Engine Surge" problem that the early Z4s had (2003-2004). I own a 3.0 2003 with similar problem.

According to a big topic dicsussion on it on the old z4um forum the problem turned out to be the old software on the engines DME. A number of people had BMW flash their DMEs with the software in the newer Z4s which fixed the problem.

I'm hoping to have mine done soon too (out of warranty though) as it is pretty embarrasing to drive an expensive sports car and have it cough and splatter when accelerating..It usually does it if I switch it to manual steptronic mode or if I have pressed the sports button and only gently accelerate (not full throttle)

Let us know how you go if you get BMW to fix it as above..

thanks drzed for your help :) .... here is z4um when i need him :!: :!:

Mine is build in 2/2004, as manual gears, and don't have "SPORT" button :( :( :x
i tried cold, hot; with AC on or off, and now i trying with DTC off ... but its all ways the same.

And the strange, is that during one our two week the car have no problems (only slight faults in power at 2800rmps, that nobody see, only i see) and then starts again. I tried to reset the throttle (10 seg ignition on then 10 seg off) and dont do nothing, dont reset our i can't see any reset.

I'm going to ask the stealer to flash mine ... but i think is going to tell me to go to that place

but tell me something,
if you only gently release the clutch pedal without touch the accelerator, your car start moving and goes by it self ????????????????????? without accelerator ???????????? i never see this in gas/petrol cars, only in diesel cars.

Let's turn the z4-forum in the new z4um ..... all z4 owners need a good forum
:D

Badz4 - let them update the DME. If that doesn't help, let them check the idle control valve (might need cleaning).

And yes, you can take off without pressing the gaspedal.
