My dad permitted me to use his Z4 for a date last night, and today the top won't go back down. I had the automatic convertible top down last night, twice, and put it back up both times. Everything appeared fine. But, this morning when I tried it one more time, nothing happened. No noise is made at all. The windows do not even go down as they usually do before the top does.

The manual has a troubleshooting guide where it refers to two lights, a red light and a yellow light between the buttons that lower and raise the roof. Ordinarily, while opening the roof, the red light comes on. But, now the yellow light comes on steadily (not blinking). I don't know what I did, but if anyone knows of a way to try and reset it or something - or if someone has some idea what is going on or what I should do, I would greatly appreciate it.

Bummers :(

I do not have any suggestions about reseting, but I can't imagine that you did anything wrong with normal top operation. It's a real longshot, but you can try lowering the windows "manually" first and then try lowering the top.

justin84 Welcome to the forum.

Sorry, I don't have any idea what would cause that problem but I agree it does not sound like you did anything wrong.

Check on the moveable panel in the trunk. This horizontal panel can be raised via two round knobs at either side of the trunk opening. If this panel was partially raised by mistake (I've done this) the top will not retract and you'll get a warning light.

The panel will move upward when the top is raised to allow you to store larger items in the trunk. It must be lowered manually to allow the top to retract.

Hope this works.

Try moving the adjustable "shelf" in the boot from the "roof down" to the "roof up" position and back again, maybe one of the micro-switches is a bit sticky.

what wondermike said. what i suggest is when u move it to the move-down, give it a good twist so it actually goes down. if fails, check the lining behind the covers and make sure the clips are still attached (identified by white). if that fails, if the mechanics of the roof is making sounds but is not unclipping, push the roof down slightly while it unlocks and see how it goes.

yep - that's what the yellow light means.

freaked the hell out of me when my roof wouldn't work either after filling the boot with compost recently.

it was for my lawn, btw.. :)

I think that helps with the opposite problem ... when the lid is down, and won't go up. This chappie seems to have the problem that the lid is up, but won't go down.

I suspect others are right when they say it's the storage panel in the boot. I've found that the storage panel is very useful when left down - it fits exactly 12 bottles of wine, nice and neatly!!

I hope it was bagged!!!!!!!!!!

my dealer replaced two solenoid switches for the roof once, however if your in a pickle try opening and closing the roof by the door lock, hold left to close and hold right to open, or vise versa, don't usually do it that way but it is a bypass using the key or the switch in the car.
