HELP! Z4 3.0i Coupe whining noise

I've just become (well ... 2 weeks) the proud owner of an '07 Z4 Coupe 3.0i. Fabulous car! However I am a chewing my nails about a whining / high pitched whistling noise coming from the engine or gearbox (I think) - does anyone know what it is or advise? It only seems to happen in 6th gear between 3100 & 3300 revs. Stick it in 5th or 4th and no whine whatever the revs. Also if you go to say 3500 revs in 6th & take your foot off the gas, as it passes down between 3300 & 3100 revs the whine re-appears then disappears once past 3100 revs. It's dead annoying because it's at about 80 - 84mph which is constant m/way speed. It sounds like a worn wheel bearing type noise but it's def not the wheel. Worn syncromesh or engine bearing? Can't believe that on a 3 yr old Beemer....... unless it's been thrashed? It's absolutely mint inside & out though.

It's only done 24000 miles. I bought it with a 2 year full warranty from a BMW dealer so I should have no probs re warranty. The problem is because the whine happens at 80mph+ I can guarantee a BMW stealer will say "..... sorry sir, we aren't allowed to drive cars past 70mph as it's breaking the law. Good bye". Well I do 25k miles a year so it's important!

Would a fresh oil change help? Inspection 1 is due in 6k miles anyway.

Hope someone can shed light on it. From bitter past experience if a noise appears it usually ends up in tears (Alfa 156 2.0 Twin Spark step forward....!).

Many thanks!

as you say bmw may not look at it because of the speed, so if it ends in tears it may be better, they will then have to fix it

best thing is take it back to the supplying garage, tell them about the fault, if they then refuse to test or try to fix it, You can always threaten to hand it back, reject the car. That will keep them on there toes.

Good idea but unfortunately I live in Preston & I bought it at Wood in Salisbury, not quite just down the road...! Have to say their support has been exemplary, they had to wait about 10 days after I bought it for the V5 to arrive from DVLA (long story) but lent me a 3000 miler 1-Series £30k Convertible to borrow in the meantime ..... and it was glorious weather. And they gave me a free full tank of fuel for that and for my Z4 when I eventually picked it up. Great service.

Gonna take my Z4 to the local dealer next week, it is making some queer noises not just the above, all seem to be coming from the gearbox which is also very stiff & notchy. I had a 6-speed 330cd before the Z4 3.0i Coupe & that 'box was creamy smooth.

Apart from the odd noises I love the car...!
