Help with tyres

Thanks for all the advice received. I phoned my local tyre centre and was told straight away that it would void my insurance if I was to change from run flats to standard? I had finally decided to to with staggered too. going to wait until I actually pick it up now and then sort it out.
They love a drama dont they.. thats absolute bollocks

You’ll get tons of different opinions on what’s good or bad, but your circumstances likely differ from mine so what is ideal for me might not be for you. Some thoughts:

- Do you prioritise ultimate grip over longevity?
- What about how noisy they are?
- Performance in the wet?
- Performance in the cold?
- How predictable is the handling?
- Budget?

I cycle to work so don’t use my Z as a daily. I have Bridgestone Potenza S001s on my car. I love them. They grip well and when they do break traction it’s nice and progressive. But they don’t last very well. Especially the rears since fitting my LSD 🤔

If you just want to use your car as a daily driver then most modern mid-range tyres (Falken, Toyo, etc) will serve you just fine. I’d start there then work upwards if you want more of any of the points above.

That’s BS.

But that said, today’s run flats are a million times better than the original RFTs from the early 2000s; they really aren’t that bad. But I still switched to normal tyres; staggered goodyear F1s; I’ve also got a square set of all seasons on a set of MV2 replicas (4x 8J) for winter use as the car is a daily.

Get 4 Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2's on. 'A' rated in the wet, lowest noise rating you can get at '67' and a good rating for fuel consumption. What's not to like, even the price is competitive.

100% back this, smart buy!

As others have said: an absolute crock of bovine excrement!
Get it home then look at one of the on-line tyre suppliers, always good deals to be had.
You may even find you're happy to keep the RFTs until they're worn out.
Think it's mainly 19" wheels that have issues with cracking due to the harder sidewalls on the RFTs.

Cheers enuff_zed. Went to have another look at it today and think I'm going to do just that as the tyres are almost new so mightaswell get a little bit of use out of them. Fantastic username BTW!

Lots of good advice above. I had a modified 135i for 5 years and tried a lot of different tyre brands. The car was delivered on runflats, 215/45/18 and 245/35/18. These were binned on day 2 of ownership. I fitted 225/40 and 245/35 Conti Sport Contact 3s. They gripped realy well and the rears wore out in under 5000 miles...and that was when the car was standard! Of all of the tyre brands I tried, the Contis had the best grip, but the sidewalls were MUCH too soft and potholes destroyed 3 tyres over as many years.

Avons were cheap and surprisingly good. The Michelin Supersports were disappointiung: not as good as Michelin Sport 4s that I'm currently running on the Z4. My favourites on a medium budget for performance (grip), feel and remarkable longevity, has been Vredestein Ultrac Vortis. They had better turn-in than the Contis, whilst grip was almost as good as the Contis, easily as good as the Avons and they outlasted all of the other brands. My Z4 came on a new set of Michelin SC4s. they are very, very good overall. When I checked prices recently, I found that I could save over £120 if replacing all 4 over the price of the Michelins...that won't break the bank, but the Vredesteins will last longer too...

When replacing runcraps with normal tyres, my one serious tip is to make sure that you buy the higher load variant, go for an XL version if available (as there used to be with Contis). 92W would be my minimum requirement. Runflats have much stiffer side walls than normal tyres and actually have excellent turn-in, even though their ultimate adhesion is not as good.

I run stock-staggered sized Michelin PS 4S's and I couldn't be more pleased. I drive the car in all seasons except Winter and I also have done two track days. These are outstanding tires for the E85. I will buy another set when there are worn out.

Another vote for Pilot Sport 4 here. Definitely better as a year-round tyre than the Pilot Super Sport.
