HELP with sticking something to dash top

I use one of these metal balls and magnet thing for my iPhone. Usually its stuck to the side of the stereo on the dash facia and its been fine, 3M pads work well.

I now have a new iPhone and want to put it up above the vents, just on the ridge of the silver dash facia. It looks well there, almost like a pop up screen and now Siri works well for voice maps and contacts I need to stick the metal ball on the top of the dash ( looks crap when the phone isn't there but who cares! when I'm in the car the phone in on it ) But nothing will stick the damn metal ball to the dash top! I'm close to bloody using lock tight on the thing but thats pretty permanent. I don't mind this too much but come re-sale it won't be good I think.

Anyone know of some heavy duty stickiness that will withstand pulling a strong magnet off day in day out? I've tried 3M pads but nothing stays :headbang:

strike that... VHB tape to the rescue
I was going to suggest 3M Dual-Loc. That stuff sticks to almost anything, but you need to use the right stuff to remove it come sale time. 3 different grades if I remember, from strong to 'you'll need a bigger jackhammer to get this off'
Neat stuff.

I don't want to see any suction mounts or ugly dash objects. The metal ball magnet ones are small and when the phone is in place you can't see any fixings, they're perfect for what I want but for the life of me can't get anything to stick to the dash top.

Tried 3m vhb tape today... The one that withstands 20+ bowling ball hits as seen on YouTube... The one that fix's aluminium decor facia to hotels in Dubai..... Slid right of the Z4 dash haha! Will not stick

You have prob impregnated it with silicone if your a car cleaner, would need to remove that with some non aggressive means first I'd say

maybe, but i think its just the material as i spot cleaned the part i needed to ensure contact. doesnt help not being a smith surface either i guess. I may have to stay at the side of the stereo for now, only issue with that is its half obstructed by the s/wheel which can be a pain when using maps.

the hunt continues

not enough surface area but also the iPhone would have hot air blowing on it when the roof is down as i have the front facing fans on. It maybe a glue gel type deal that sorts it ( and some careful removal when it come off )

Cut the back of an air vent air freshner, then sugru the trippd prong bit onto ball attachment .
this will fit into air vent and be removable.sugru is a moouldable platic glue. google it ,its great stuff.
This did the trick for me

reason I want it not on the vents and above on the lip of the dash front is that it just looks better and I won't have hot air blowing on the iPhone. I'll pop a pic up later, It's a perfect spot for it up there. Just a shame its that vinyl bumpy type material, nothing seems to want to adhere to it.

crap pics but gives an idea what its like up there. its easy to see but not in my line of sight when driving which is nice. Just like the OEM nav would be ( maybe should have held out for a z with nav )
