Help with passenger side sunvisor replacement

Hi

Could someone help me with a part on my 2010 z4 ( especially if you have the ivory Nappa leather package on a non sDrive 35i )

The mirror is cracked on mine and I ordered another on eBay for cheap at £18 but when it arrived it was a cheaper plastic finish without the stitching that my originals had ...looking at my one its almost as if it's leather covered ( but mine is a 23i not a 35i so I would have thought it will be the cheaper non leather Sunvisor ? )

Can someone check ? I have been quoted this part number 51.16.9.128.391 - £88.81 from a BMW dealer but again not sure if that's the right one ?

I think they sealed the units in , which is really silly since you have to change the whole thing whether it's a broken mirror, hinge or cover door, :-/

Have another idea, going to see if I can cut some acrylic mirror or thin chrome steel sheet and stick it on top of the broken mirror, there seems to be over two credit card thickness clearance with the sliding cover :-)

I have not looked at mine, but can't you slide a blade along the glass and try to remove the broken piece. You will then be able to see how far the glass is covered by the outer material. If you can do this, you may be able to fit the other mirror in ?

They all crack, its crap engineering with no damping and strong spring so no point in replacing. I replaced mine with acrylic mirror custom cut for 8 quid off ebay search safety mirror size was longer but narrower than opening used silicone to glue in, took old one out in bits. Will never crack again. Little gap above and below mirror but looks spot on.

Both of mine are perfect

But is yours an E89? They really are very poorly engineered and Im surprised they are not all broken. Its something Ive never seen happen on any other car. I wouldn't bother replacing unless the replacement is unbreakable or it is damped.

Both of mine are perfect, car is nearly 7 years old, extended leather stitched versions as OP has.

Maybe the spring tension varied on different visors?
Mine are exceptionally strong. I would recommend taking the visor off the car to glue a new mirror in with silicone to get a better job on it.

Thanks all

roger1 yes good idea I'm looking at a company that would cut the acrylic for me, can I ask what measurements you used? I presume slightly smaller than the opening so it will slot in? Also how did you remove the old broken one? Did you break it up even more and scraped off the pieces? I was thinking of sticking the acrylic one on top of the broken one,...

mine are fine too. Ive had five years of ownership.

Ah yes it was my bloody fault :D I could not work out why or how, thinking it was the roof coming down too hard, my mate closing the visor too fast etc, then I realised the most likely explanation was when I pulled the passenger seat forward when I was cleaning the car and the seat headrest must have slammed into the sunvisor....

44.5mm x 100mm square corners, and smooth edges acrylic mirror 3mm from http://stores.ebay.co.uk/A-D-Acrylic-Mirrors?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

You could also use toughened glass? The acrylic scratches sadly from the slide and isn't as tough as glass but is safe and safe in a crash

Can I add need to be careful not the perforate through behind the mirror as would damage undersurface of visor and try not to damage sides of the slide cosmetically and not lever against although I found this impossible personally and its a little marked but no big deal.
I bought my car from a back street dealer and had damaged windscreen(autoglass for 250),broken visor(8 quid and 3 quid for silicone), broken ashtray(wouldn't close)(sprng bar fallen out below it fixed for free), damaged steering roundel-36 quid, damaged main roundel, defective roof-microswitch and INPA v57 software around 20+50 quid(didn't really need software), cigarette lighter not working(fuse 50p).
The wheels need refurbing which will be 200 then I will have a top machine for far far less than a bmw main dealer. No surprises this car hadn't sold for the many months they had it , lucky me as I stole it :driving:

Thanks roger1 for very comprehensive reply, place of work has a laser cutter so looking at getting a small stainless steel mirror (1mm thick) and see if I can cut it to size and stick it on top of the broken mirror :-)

Yes it brilliant to get a steal and spend a little time getting your pride and joy back to showroom condition! :)
