Help with paddles please

Hi there. Just finished fitting new slip ring, cut steering wheel and fitted paddles looks good but not working  . Have run cable from the front of slip ring and grounded the two wires and it changes up and down fine. So I'm thinking its the paddle wire itself? Any ideas anyone??!

Have you put a multimeter on the wires from the paddles and checked the resistance goes to zero when you operate them?

Hi Marcus, I never got round to fitting them so if you find they are not working then let me know and I'll refund

Thanks Stuart I will try that tomorrow evening and let you know the outcome.
Cheers ranski for the refund offer sure it's just I wire or something

Right, have put multimeter on the wires and the resistance goes go nearly to zero when operating the paddles one way and needle moves about half way when going the other way? :!:

Easy ...

Ground the wires one at a time below the slip ring that you ran from the selector. it will change up or down a gear. If it does work, repeat above the slip ring. If it works again, then it's paddle switch or loom.

That you can easily bench test.

I suggest care with a meter on the gearbox selector wires

Hi cj, I have ran a cable from the airbag side of the slip ring to check this works, went for a quick drive and got the better half to ground wires one at a time and it changes fine, but then collect the paddles up and nothing.

I have a couple of Canoes in the Garrage, paddles work fine on those.

Not much good with electrifiddle stuff though. :?

How do I go about bench testing the paddles and loom? :D

Connect a reset cable to the point where you plug your paddle harness into the top of the slip ring and repeat the grounding test. Of course this must be done with the airbag connected so I suggest you do it static on the drive with the airbag secured back in and leads coming around it. Take care....

If that works it's the paddles
It's just 2 momentary on switches with 2 positions each. Just check resistance in each circuit. Shoudl be 0 iirc as I don't remember any resistors in them

Hi cj done that with the reset cable and it works fine up and down the auto box , so it's not the new slip ring (87.00 bloody quid) or the cabling from the box to slip ring. Take it can only be the paddles? Not sure how to test the paddles themselves.I have removed the top caps so will try and check them later on. Thanks

Paddles it is then. Pull the connector plug out of your new slip ring and run some simple circuit tests on those. I suspect the small harness that runs sise to side in the wheel is broken as there are in effect 4 switches and chances of even 2 failing is slim. Could have been stretched or trapped in the horn or airbag mountings
