Help with a new camera

srhutch, thanks. So I think is suits me as I really wanted a kind of point-and-click DSLR for very occasional use, but I wanted better pics than a compact. I'll probably give it away in a couple of years or so and just get something very similar again, so no worrying about lenses etc.

TBH I think there's probably a fair market for this low-end stuff.

One reason I bought the D80 was size. I have large hands (yes, the other part of the rumour is true, hehe). The Canon I looked at had a smaller body, the D80 larger and felt better. I believe taking one or both for a test drive for an hour or so to be sure. Most reputable camera shops will accommodate this. they did for me anyway.

Wondermike, I agree and think it is a good camera to start with aslong as you arent going to go made and buy many lenses. biggest problem is that most people buying wont know about the lenses which could be really annoying.

I bought my first DSLR four 4 years ago (Canon 300D), and just upgraded to the 40D because of the lenses I have acquired, the thought of having to start over again with lenses would be dawnting.

Yeah it does sound a bit limiting if you do want to get more into it.

At the risk of dragging this O/T, but still maybe of some use to 2dogs anyway, what do all these different lenses do, and why do you get them?

There are different sorts of lenses for different situations. Here are a few:

The telephoto lens : For taking pictures from far away, often of wildlife or sport (or for 2dogs, women getting changed in their bedroom)

The zoom lens : This gives you a range to play with. In terms of looking in camera shops 10 - 16 is very wide angle, 16 - 80 is a nice mid range, anything over 100 is good for long distance.

Wide angle : These are great for scenery shots. You can get a whole panorama in a single pic

Prime lens : These are fixes at a particular distance... usually better quality but you gotta move your feet to get the right pic :D

Macro lens : These are for taking pics of objects up close. You can get some amazing pics with these, but beware, the cheaper (non dslr) cameras do this BETTER unless you spend serious cash on it!

There are more, which I won't go into now, but that covers most of it. Another thing to keep in mind is the longer the zoom the more benefit you would get from image stabilsation.

Lastly, there is the "F" number on the lens, but I'll leave that for someone else to explain, it's getting late and I need sleep :D

Canon is a very good kit for the everyday user, plus there are plenty of lenses available, fairly cheap, on flea-bay

As sp3ctre says you are restricted with lenses on D40, so would not recommend, guy at work bought one not knowing this and is regretting.

My new Canon 40D is very nice, although now obsolete as the 50D is out very soon. :x

It's hardly obsolete - it's just not the top the current prosumer line Canon DSLR anymore. It will continue to take very nice photos for many years to come. It is still a far better camera than anything in the EOS Rebel lineup.

I exagerate I know, the 50D doesnt offer much over the 40D (what I would use anyway) and there is a price hike as well.

Wow.. Just been comparing the Canon 40D and 450D on the jessops website..

What justifies the £400'ish price difference?

Edit: 7 frames/sec, 3200 ISO, 1/8000's sec shutter speed... (I guess this provides better opportunities to get better pics in certain scenarios)

7frames per second! :w00t: :camera: That would be great!

another O/T question... anyone used an online photography class? I looked at schoolofphotography.com because I need to learn a bunch and don't really have time to take a course at the local college.

If you want to have the bees knees ... have a look at this Canon 5D:
