Correct, the kit lens on the 450D is so much better than the other kit lenses.
IMHO if you are going to get into photography a 50mm prime lens is a great asset to have. The Canons and the Nikon D80 have the auto focus motor in the camera but the D40 doesn't. This means that you have a limited amount of lenses with the AF in the lens. To cut a long story short (ish) the 50mm prime lens on the D40 would be manual focus only, and on the D80 it would auto focus.
Canon is a lovely bit of kit though, I have the 400D too and love it!
