IMHO if you are going to get into photography a 50mm prime lens is a great asset to have. The Canons and the Nikon D80 have the auto focus motor in the camera but the D40 doesn't. This means that you have a limited amount of lenses with the AF in the lens. To cut a long story short (ish) the 50mm prime lens on the D40 would be manual focus only, and on the D80 it would auto focus.
Canon is a lovely bit of kit though, I have the 400D too and love it!
I've been looking for a descent camera recently as well. So I'm interested in everyones thoughts as well.
If I go down the DSLR route I had come to the conclusion that the Canon EOS D450 was a good bet. It was listed here recently for a good price:

..but I am still questioning if I really need it. Having tried a friends at the weekend at a family bash I realised a good camera doesn't guarantee good pics.
Balancing a pint whilst imitating David Bailey was a nightmare!!
Really my priority is high quality, variable shutter speed, and something that will fit in the jacket pocket.. I dont want to spend £200+ on a high end point and shoot then wish I'd gone that bit further..

Keep an eye out for hotukdeals.com, that camera makes an appearance every week, so you should be able to snag a bargain if you time it right.
EDIT: LOL, that'll teach me to look closer... Street already posted one from that site!

[/disclaimer]Can't you just buy lenses specifically for the D40, I knew that when I bought it, but I thought it would only matter if you already had existing lenses that wouldn't fit. Can you now just buy new lenses that auto-focus inside the lense. That's why I thought it was OK for a beginner :idunno:

What justifies the £400'ish price difference?
Edit: 7 frames/sec, 3200 ISO, 1/8000's sec shutter speed... (I guess this provides better opportunities to get better pics in certain scenarios)

Yes my understanding is you need specific lenses for the D40, so if you have a Nikon film camera you wont be able to use tose lenses unless you want to focus manually.
Another concern would be if you upgrade the body in a few years, what happens with the lenses, would you need to start again?
