Help stop me get (potentially) ripped off (auto-up window)

Hi All,

Im hoping someone here can tell me whether its me or my local garage who is being unreasonable......

The short story is, I have an 06 Z4M and on Friday the local garage replaced the drivers side window regulator as the elec window stopped working. No problem there.

When I picked the car up and drove off I noticed the airbag warning light was on so i drove back, they plugged the car into a laptop and turned the warning light off. So, no real problem there.

However, on sat was the first time I used the windows. On the drivers and passenger side they went "auto down" but would not "auto up". I had to keep my fingers on the button to get them up.

Also, when i press and hold the button to put the roof down, both windows go half down, the roof goes back, then the passenger window goes back up but the drives side does not go up. Surely this also shows its not a "switch" problem?

I took the car back today and they have reset the passenger side window, it now will auto up and down. However, they have told me that the switch on the drivers side is broken and needs to be replaced (one hundred and something pounds plus vat). I suggested that it was a bit of a co-incidence that the switch breaks on the same day that the other switch needs resetting and that maybe they should replace the switch at no cost to me as the problem occurred "on their watch". They took huge offense to this as I was "accusing them of damaging the car". I said I wasn't accusing them but as the car has covered 65000 miles and is 5 years old then hopefully they could see why I was a little confused at the apparent co-oincidence!

I have used this garage before and been really happy with their work so I suggested that we go halves on the work. Again the garage refused saying that they would order the switch but I would have to pay for it, and the labour, in full..............

I want my door window to work properly. Am i right to be suspicious or do I have to admit that it could well not have been their fault at all?

Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

doesn't sound like a broken switch to me, otherwise like you said, it would work with the roof too...

sounds like the windows need resetting but im not sure on the process, maybe someone else can link to it :)

does this help? if not, perhaps an indy with the software thing that can switch on/off the auto up feature on the windows - I know my passenger side doesn't auto up and needs to be switched on to do this (it does auto down - the drivers side does auto up/down).

Try a window reset.....

1. Turn on the ignition
2. Depress the individual window button until the window is open, then keep it pressed for 5 seconds longer.
3. Depress the window button until it is closed, then release.
4. This should reset the memory on the window.

Same procedure for both windows

Thanks guys, I appreciate your thoughts. I have tried the window reset but nothing :(.

I have also returned to the garage that did to work on the regulator and they still insist its the switch and that it is not their problem. Even though the roof also does not make the window work either. They suggested that the roof goes through the same circuit and thats why its not working, i.e. because the switch is not working.

I told them I would be taking it to another main garage for repair, if it is the switch I would come in and let them know. However, if its not the switch and its something that could only have been caused by them making a mistake in the repair I would be returning with the bill and expecting them to pay me. To that they said "see you in court", and to be fair I know I wont get anywhere, but it will make me feel better to write a letter copying in Trading Standards and anyone else I can think of!

Ill put a post up when I get the fix from the garage. Thanks again.

When I picked the Z up mine did exactly the same. I did the reset as explained above and it didn't fix it... but kept trying and over about a week it all just worked.

Not sure if this is of any help, but I bet your switch isn't broken.

Same here... didn't work for me, but after a few days it worked.
I don't think anything is broken including the switch they are mentioning.

ah b@lls! Im all booked in to another garage for Thurs this week. I couldn't stand the not knowing! Ill let you know how i get on. And in the mean time Ill keep trying the reset just in case. More excuses to drive around :)

Have you tried the ol' "did you turn it off and on again" routine?

Meaning... disconnect the battery for a few minutes, then reconnected it to reset the computers/memory. Then perform the window reset function.

Is the ignition 'on' as in the car is started, or just position 1 so the electrics power up?

Some old instructions from my archives. I have to do the reinitialization each time the battery has been disconnected.

------------------
Initialization is performed on the power window switch of the relevant door.
Requirements for correct initialization:
- Initialization with engine running
- Convertible top, doors and windows closed

Initialization comprises:
- Erasure of initialization
- Reinitialization

An initialization must be performed:
- In the event of malfunctions, e.g. no one-touch control function, no opening or if available no comfort function is possible
- After the power window drive has been replaced
- After work is carried out on the power window mechanism
- After a power supply interruption, e.g. disconnection of the battery or disconnection of the power supply to the door
- After the door window glass has been removed and installed or replaced
- After adjustment work on the door window glass
ï After adjustment work on the convertible top
ï After replacement of seals

Erasure of initialization:
- Open door window glass fully
- Operate power window switch in "Open" position four times within 10 seconds

This erases initialization of the power window, anti-trapping protection and toll function are inactive.
Check whether one-touch control (toll) function is inactive, otherwise repeat procedure.

Reinitialization:
Avoid a break between the two steps!
- Open door window glass fully
- Operate and hold power window switch in "Close" position (second switch stage)
- Once the upper end position has been reached, hold power window switch in "Close" position for approx. 2 seconds longer
- Open door window glass fully
- Operate and hold power window switch in "Close" position (second switch stage)
