Has anybody ever replaced their soft top hood?
I've bought a BAS hood, but they don't seem to have any instructions on how to fit it..

Any help would be appreciated, thanks :)

Think there's a good guide on here if you have a look/search how to section

Thanks, I had a look and couldn't find anything.
It all seemed to be related to removal of the roof to replace the motor, however I'm sure I can replace the outer hood without taking it all out?

Regards

Ummm...?

You want to remove the roof, the guides show how to do that, what am I missing?

As I've been told from the person I bought it from, the roof doesn't need removing..

So get them to tell you how to do it?

I've done that and the chap seems unresponsive.. Need it fitted tomorrow before the rain.

I think you've answered your own question so to speak . The seller told you what you wanted to hear so he could sell you his item . I suspect with the greatest respect , you have been had fella . I hope I'm wrong for your sake , but in another thread two people including myself ( two roof Savy guys on this forum ) gave you our opinions
On what you should have done , which was get a second hand genuine roof . I think now you either persue a refund from the seller and go down the second hand route or contact a specialist tonneau cover repairer and see if they will undertake the work .

Gaffer tape until then?

Is this a business seller with a registered address, probably worth pursuing for a refund, only if you're confident they have premises and it's worth taking them to court though.

You're misunderstanding the point.
I purchased a hood off here to replace mine.

I'm after some advice on how to replace the hood and whether is can be done without removing the whole roof.

I am not after any other advice other than how to replace the hood.

Thanks

It may well be possible to replace the hood fabric without full frame removal but I suspect you would need to have this done in an experienced auto trimmers workshop if you want good results. The Z4 hood is double skinned and there will be a fair amount of glueing/stitching/clipping required whilst needing to be careful get the tension just right for the look of the hood shape and seals etc..

Any trimmer worth his salt would probably want the frame off the car anyway to the job properly.

Do BAS not offer a fitting service for their product?

If you bought the roof off here , I'd like to see the member step forward and tell us all how you replace the fabric without removing the roof assembly .

I for one you like to see how this is possible whilst achieving a decent result , as I stand to be corrected , but it isn't possible. You need to remove the roof assembly , which really isn't all that complicated .

I thought you were advised to get another full roof off ebay, complete with frame, when you asked in another thread. No5 offered to help or do the exchange for you ?? Unless I'm getting you mixed up with another member :|

Paxal - I did advise you to get a complete roof ! :headbang:

The fabric is attached to the metal hoop that is bolted all around the inside of the boot and has a second (rubber) upper flange, that pushes onto the boot lip ( You can see this all around the back, under the rear windscreen).

There is no way you can attach the new fabric tightly to the car without unbolting this hoop, removing the old fabric and replacing it with the new fabric, therefore the only way is to take the roof out. I would imagine that it would have to be done in open space anyway, probably with the roof on the garage floor.

The only way I would ever just buy the fabric is if I wanted a bespoke colour. You only have to look at the mechanism when the roof is half up to see that certain parts are riveted to the frame with small loops etc and then you've the hoops to go inside the lining, etc. - Nightmare job !

Luckily I'm only about 10 miles from you, so if you want a half roof cover before the rain tomorrow, I have one you can borrow. However, you'll need to arrange to come and collect it from Bradley Stoke?

The old hood is now fully removed, will remove the whole roof inc bars tonight to fit the new hood.
It seems it could be possible to fit without removal of the whole roof, but it'll be a real struggle compared to simply removing the roof and fit the hood to it out of the car.

Hello P4XLL
Is this the hood you have bought: http://www.car-hood.co.uk/beetle-auto-h1106

Is this a complete hood or literally the skin? I'd be interested to know because I've contemplated a new hood/colour but it's not entirely clear to me what you get for your £669.

How are you getting on ?
Are you going to relocate the motor whilst it's all out ?
