Help pls.. Is my air filter housing broken?

Hi All

Hoping for some quick help here.

I've just been tinkering under the bonnet and lifted the lid on the air filter housing, thinking it is designed to come off as it has on previous cars.

However, it came off very easily and now will not push back on. There is lots of dried glue underneath. Is it supposed to come off or is it meant to be a sealed unit?
Here's a pic...

So basically should I:
1. Clear the glue off and try and push it back into place
2. Clear the dried glue off and put some more glue on to glue it into place
3. Replace the whole housing

Looking on Reol OEM it looks like 1 big unit:

Thanks in advance

Hi,

it's not meant to come off like that anyway, there are 4 or 5 clips you release to open up the housing to get access to the filter.

To be honest I think it would be difficult to glue it properly...I'd say this has been done before, that's why it came off so easily.

You could try it though your call or maybe a second hand one ..good luck !

The clips are half way down the box, so there aren't any clips for the top bit.

So annoying!

I think im going to have to attempt to glue it again until I can source a 2nd hand housing to replace it else I can't drive the car :(

If anyone has any further advice it would be very welcome.

Clean the old glue off and buy some good quality clear silicone sealer/adhesive from B&Q and reglue it .......I wouldnt drive it like that as your engine is breathing unfiltered air, grit and any small stones that sods law says will find their way into your engine

Would bostik all purpose extra strong clear adhesive (glue) do the job for atleast the short term?

Have you not got a DIY store or Screwfix/Tool Station nearby.

I think Silscone will be easier to apply and being flexible will ensure a good fit.

Remove the top part of the box: I can see two of the clips in the photo. Then stick the lid back on to the bit it's come off. I suspect that a glue like "No More Nails" or "Sticks like S***" will work, provided that it will withstand temperatures up to about 70 degsC. Make sure its thoroughly set before refitting (do a test gluing on something else at the same time as doing the repair so that you can test). If you do a tidy job, nobody will ever know it's come apart. Just make sure you get a proper seal.

Thanks guys. I've used some no more nails to glue back together. I'll leave it over night and try and fit it tomorrow.

Guess im now in the market for a replacement as im a bit of a perfectionist, now I know it's like that I want to do a proper job of it.

Would be rude not to explore aftermarket alternatives too. Any recommendations?

Dan

Well using No More Nails was a bit of a fail.

Checked it this morning and it had tried, but the glue has dried very brittle. I touched a few pieces and they broke off.

So there's no way i'm putting it back on the car now in case any breaks off and gets sucked into the engine.

So the car is now off the road until I can source a replacement :( Being sunday and a bank holiday I can't see me getting one until next weekend now. Gutted.

Too scared to even drive her round the front for a clean.

You need some silicone sealant, like we use to seal our headlamps back together.

Screwfix do a good one for about a fiver.
