Hi Had my roadster 2.5 sport 6 months ... so far had to top up oil 3 times then other day when cold drove off and car cut out then the engine emission light came on i re started the car which just about started then it was pluttering and didnt have much power... i stopped turned off then 10 mins later it started fine and that engine emission light went off.... and it seemed fine the rest of the day... next morning same thing car cut out after few mins then spluttering ...then once again once it warmed up seemed fine... now in general the car seems a lil jumpy and when still the revs seem high just over 1 somethimes... saved alot of money for this car and feel gutted as scared to drive it ... any ideas what could be

I think this is going to be difficult to diagnose without reading out the fault codes fron the system. Some others may be able to suggest a few things to try but that will be a trial and error basis.

My guess is a failed lamda sensor causing overfueling but then why does the light go off later? Maybe a bad connection?

Another guess would be a failing coil pack. Is the car parked outside? If so, a failing coil pack could be getting damp and then dries out after a short period of running.

As I say - these are guesses. It's time's like this that it would be handy to have a decent cide reader for the diagnistic system.

Otherwise, get down to you nearest independant BMW garage for a proper diagnosis as you can waste time and money trying to repair by guessing.

sensor - not really
coil pack - medium

take it to an indy to read the fault code. should be around £30-£40 dependent on area.

How many miles are you doing between oil top-ups, which oil do you use, where was it last serviced and how do you drive the car (Slow/Hard/Short Trips etc).

The M54 Engines can like a bit of oil. Mine used to lose about 1L every 1500 miles (or more on the runs!). Last intermediate service I did (every 7500 miles) I replaced an after-market oil filter with a genuine BMW one and used 5w40 fully synthetic oil. It has now used less than 1/4l in the 2500+ miles since!! :D

Dodgy oil-filter o-ring are a chief culprit, along with oil filter housing gasket and rocker cover gasket.
