Hello all! I'm looking for some help on buying a z4!
As Iv been wanting a z4 from a child I have been saving for a good few years and now I have a full time job i have decided that for my 21st I'm going to swap my fiat stilo for my childhood dream car! I'm looking to spend around £12000 on the car I'm stuck between getting a 2.0 or a 2.5 hopefully around 06 plate, the insurance is a lot more for this increase in engine size is it going to be worth it? Any ideas on pros or cons with the different engines? I also have been looking on the Internet at getting the m conversion kit with the quad exhausts (style.co.uk) any ideas if this is any good?

The reason for all this is I love the BMW z4m but would have to wait till I'm over 25 to get insured so this would be the next best thing!

Anyone's thoughts would be great!

Thanks :-)

search alanj as he has a link in his sig to a buyers guide. Andy has also done a bit of a write up on here of FAQs

Good luck in the search

Have you considered buying a slightly older 3.0? They are no more to run than the 2.5 (same mpg) the only down side is you will pay more for insurance which in my opinion is definately worth it for the extra grunt, plus you get more options as standard on a 3.0. The money you save on buying a slightly older car you can put towards your insurance anyway. Just a thought :D

Welcome what cracking enthusiasm for the Zed! I don't know what your financial resilience will be like at 21 but as a lifelong petrolhead who's burnt more money than I dare recall on cars, I would urge you to buy the newest, low mileage, well serviced and warrantee example you can, if that means a 2.0 go for it they are a cracking drive.

IMHO pushing up the performance range will cost a lot more all round and could end up spoiling the experience, unless money is no object of course!

I would forget this for the moment as insurance company's take a dim view of this and it will bump up the price. If you can stand the insurance I would go for the 2.5 I bought the 2.0 and sold it within two months I just felt imo it was underpowered for a sports car.

Thanks I have thought about it but I really like the new sport seats in the newer Z's look allot more modern and sporty. I love the idea of getting a 2.0i sport, as a young driver you probs think I would drive like a crazy arse lol, but I don’t really. I’m not sure I would need the any more power. I have had a go in a 3.0i but not a 2.5 the 3.0 felt like amazing power. Have you had any experience with a 2.0i and a 2.5?

Thanks for the advice finance all good for me but the running cost of a higher engine doesn’t seem to practical, I don’t want to waste my cash on something that offers no real benefits if you get me! I do think getting the newest, low mileage, well serviced car is a very good bet! Cheers!

No sorry I have not but I have put modified exhausts on previous motors and it has put insurance up by a big jump.

Hey,

I'm currently going through the same kinda thing. I'm 21 just about to turn 22 and looking at a 3.0l 2003/2004 model. You'll much prefer the power. Go test drive the three and see what you think but if you have a couple years no claims and have been driving since you were 17 you can nab insurance just short of 1500 with elephant. (horrendous I know but it's still not completely unreasonable). You can also get a decent 3.0l 2003/2004 for around 10k or under so the extra cash can go on insurance.

If you wait till winter the prices drop a considerable amount from approved used too, might be worth considering.

Hope this helps :)
