Hi please some advice on a number of paint work issues. I brought the car at the lower end of the market and I know it's a 9 year old car. And I probably wouldn't have been so bothered b4 I joined hear. Never have up till now. I am very happy with the car it's got more toys extras than I was looking for. Good mechanically and it's a 3.0l and I love it

So the problems
1 the boot and passengers front wing had rub marks when I went to view the car. The garage agreed to fix them. It looked ace when I picked it up. But now it's all bubbling what if any thing can I expect the garage todo? I bought the car on the 5/10/12
2 rear passengers side has a scratch and someone has toyed touching it up it looks rubbish
3 the other rear wing is the right colour but is rough to the touch? Bad repair I guess could this clay bar and polish up?
4 the normal scrapes lower bumper. Stone chips on the bumper bonnet.
5 rear bumper has scrapes.

Are smart repairers any good? Should I save for a full respray or should I try a DIY wrap?

Look forward to the advice great wise ones.

Sorry to hear your list of paint niggles Mm . in truth i'm sure most of us have some paint issues we would like sorting .
for me its the front bumper with a few scratches around the bottom .
As for the DIY wrap ? :o NO mate . don,t do it .
Sure someone on here can recommend a bodyshop to help you out

Thanks mr Wilks your always there with advice. I won't be out side later now after a few beers and the sticky back plastic.......

Here are my thoughts Machine Monkey.

Point 1, since the paint job was only done less than 9 weeks ago, I would be insisting that the garage to do it again since it is not unrealistic to expect the paint job to last a bit more than just a couple of months. Did they mention or provide a guarantee for the paint job they did?

Point 2, it really depends on the scratch, without pictures or seeing it you might need to get the panel sprayed.

Point 3, worth a good rub with clay bar followed by a good polish and wax.

Point 4, Get the front bumper removed and sprayed, and depending how far the stone chips are up the bonnet, they may be able to flash the bonnet and wings at the same time to make sure you have a perfect colour match. I think to spray a front bumper is about £200 to £250, not sure on costs to spray the rear bumper. You might be able to negotiate the price down if you have the bumpers and scratched panel done at the same time.

Thanks swiftly I was thinking its very poor for the paint to end up like this so soon.

I will try and post some photos of the scratch. I have never used clay bar so it's worth a try.

I seem to have so many marks scrapes I had best get a quote for spraying the hole car :(
Never know the garage might be good sports and do a deal??

Yep, agree with Swiftly, when I first bought mine, paint was pretty good (couple of door edge chips, bumper was immaculate). After 9 months the front bumper started to peel, (the lacquer coat) so I took it back to the dealer. They took it on, resprayed it etc at no cost. So your dealer should definitely repair their bad work

Scratches etc can polish out - you may want to find a detailer close to you to have a look and quote?

As Markeg has said, some scratches can be polished out, but really depends how deep the scratch is mate. Post some pics and good luck, let us know how you get on

I would invest in a machine polisher and some products..You will improve the look of your car immensly with some claying, machine polishing and some wax...

Scrapes can be touched in by a smart repairer..

From what i have seen, the paint on all BMW's of this period easily suffer from chips and scratches.... Im sure it coincided with the use of waterbased paint..

Thanks guys defiantly going to be making a phone call tomorrow hope they help. I have some cleaning products and a machine polisher on the Xmas list. Fingers crossed Santa is good to me this year.

Dealer said they would fix the problem  They are also lending me a car for the duration hope its not crap!!

As a singe of good will they are going to look at the other problems as well. Either fix for free or at cost.

Is this a main dealer?

My only concern about them fixing other issues as a good will would be making the other issues worse

The front wing the originally fixed they obviously done a cheap spray job on either took it somewhere not very good or rushed the work

I would ask them how they intend fixing the problems, re-spray, touching up etc.

Just wouldn't want to be in the same position in a few months time with all the issues again

I would be more inclinded to let them fix the original problem front wing at a bodyshop of your choice, then they can pick up the bill

And while it's there I would pay for the other bits to be done myself

At least then you can go somewhere on recommendation and review of somewhere good

Hi Sam no it's not a main dealer.

I said about getting done somewhere else as I had these same concerns :(

The garage have assured me that it will be ok. Apparently they had had a few cars like it. And they have found the problem and the guy dose not work for the third party. And apparently the third party are fixing the problems free as it hurt the reputation.

Fingers crossed :|

So i have been concerned with other issues with the car recently. All fixed now and the weather looks good in Oxfordshire Sunday. So i am going to have a play with some fixing up of the paint work ( if i am feeling brave )

The dodgy paint is going to be fixed by the garage they assure me it will be ok this time.
I am going to have a play at fixing the rear quarter panels. Passengers side has a scratch. Its been touched up but not well. The drivers side is just rough all over the panel.
Pasengers side i am just going to try polishing first. Then if brave some 2000 grit paper very lightly!! Drivers side i am going to just polish with some paint restorer and again polish.

Any advice or no don't do that will be welcome. Watched a lot 9of vids on yutube and done a bit of reading. Fingers crossed!!

Really leave the rubbing down with grit paper as a very last resort..

Why is the paint rough?? Just bonded contaminants or is the laquer rough ??

Yeah definently a last resort just managed to find some 400 grit in case i do have to :!: .

I am not sure i have a clay bar kit i am going to try that first.

If you do have a go with sanding, you will need to polish it up after. I did a wet sanding detailing day last year and we were told to start at 2000, then go to 3000 followed by 4000, each piece having been soaked in a mix of water & car shampoo for at least 10 minutes and keep dipping the wet&dry in the water. When you have finished at 4000, use a rotary or dual action polisher as 4000 will leave fine scratches / dullness. Also, use a flexible but firm backing pad - high density foam rubber type.

If you have a large blob of paint, you can use a de-nibber or (much cheaper) a razor blade wrapped with insulation tape at either side of the centre so you only have a small part of the blade exposed. Run this over the blob to shave it down, then take some of the insulation tape off and do it again and keep taking tape off until smooth. Don't take all the tape off as you will scratch the paint.

Thanks Paul

Very helpful and makes sense to me  I am going to avoid using the wet and dry if i can. It just dose not seem right!!
