Got into the car after work today. Car drove fine for a few hundred metres then got a horrible screeching noise from under the front. Thinking something metal got caught underneath, got out to look and couldnt find anything obvious. In the garage now and they're having a look now. The noise is completely independent from the engine speed so I think something may be wrong with the wheel hub or something.

Any ideas please?

Stuck brake caliper?
only a guess as something similar happened to a mate's Z3 a week or two ago - noticed it in the handling though...

Thanks for replying. Turned out a stone flicked up and jammed itself between the brake pad and the disc. Good thing I didn't try to drive on it or couldve caused some damage. Luckily it was only £24 labour costs to remove

ah, glad you got it sorted quickly, nothing worse than having to worry about a potential big bill (well, other than having to pay an actual big bill!), sounds like a strange thing to happen though, I wonder how commonly this occurs?

Common on any disc brake. If not a stone then some brakes (not Zed) have screech plates that when the pads wear out make the same noise

BTW if it happens again a quick test is to puit it in reverse and tap the brakes. Usually dislodges anything.
