Help me find a Z4 3.0 :(

Sold my car, got the money in cash, now the hard bit it turns out is finding a car,

im after a z4 3.0, which has under 80k, and i have £9000, can stretch a few £100 more maybe. (so thats probably upto about 9600 advertised price)

Ive arranged to see three so far,
1. first one was owned by a huge lady and had bad leather, steering was off and the discs needed changing all round.
2. Next one american guy said it had done 74k, but bmw said it had 120+ (DV04 LGX, was on H1YKV)
3. next one american guy (theme here?) arrange to meet, he is 200 miles away so i leave v early, i get 80 miles in and he called to say there is no log book. turned around and came home. (LL03 OUB)

Does anyone know of any that fit my bill? i would go down to a 2.5 if it had leather and some toys.
would anyone be willing to look at some for me if they are near? i dont want to do another 200 mile journey to see a shed

Cheers

Chris

Welcome. If you want "near", perhaps you need to let us know where you are based :)

Your budget is fine, you should easily get a 3.0 for that on. Would not go down to a 2.5, you would always regret that.

im in somerset, but im happy to look around here its just if a car is in liverpool for example maybe a member who is close could have a look at the paperwork and make sure its not a dog, save me a journey!

not too fussy about colour, the grey and black the best, then silver, then red and blue.

Use this thread as a bit of a blog...

Put up the ones you are thinking of looking at and we can all do some noseying for you too... every bit of help, errr, helps :D

This is the problem of looking at the lower end of the price range. Mine was the same as I wanted a bottom-end of budget car, and so it meant lots of calling up and getting a feel for the sellers (most were traders which is half-reassuring, but traders can also be idiots too!)

Check list:

MOT cert number so you can check MOT advisories on internet before going to see car, and also check mileages etc... these give clues as to things to look at that might be wrong with the car, or if they have been rectified!
Make sure it has a service history you are happy with. Mine has a patch where it looked a bit dodgy, but I rang the dealer doing the stamping and it all checked out. I even plotted the dates vs mileages and they made a nice straight realistic looking line. So ring dealers/traders to check the stamps are all correct if you have any doubts!

Just try do as much remote checking up as possible.

Lastly, travelling costs. If you go to see 3 cars at 100 miles each way, that is 600 miles, maybe £100 in fuel, and possibly still not be happy. Throw in some full-quality HPI checks that is maybe another £100...

Sometimes it's best to say that you will pay £500 more if the car is closer to you?

Lastly, check for accident damage, general wear/tear too. Cheap ones are probably cheap for a reason. Make sure the car is nice and clean when you see it and literally walk around the car as if you were washing it. You will likely see stuff but it then becomes a haggling point or a decision if you want to buy it now you have spotted stuff wrong with it.
Mine had some niggles but I was happy to ignore or resolve later.

Also, very last here, you might be looking forever. Sometimes you just have to hedge your bets and go with one and hope tomorrow a guy on the next street to you doesn't sell the perfect Z4 for you hehe.

It sounds like you have found some really dodgy sellers, which isn't so nice. My mate bought a clocked Z4 the other year and only found out from the MOT's online (the trader had 'lost' the certificate but was getting one)... all very dodgy! Again, bottom-end of the market... so much harder to get a genuine car... they are out there, just takes more looking through the crap. So much more important to do more work before you go visit :D

Where are you based, would help us find cars for you that are near :)

Have you seen this?

I like this one...

Bit over budget, but worth going to see?

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201022360124451/sort/priceasc/usedcars/engine-size-cars/3l_to_3-9l/price-to/15000/model/z4/make/bmw/page/2/postcode/ta43ab/radius/1500?logcode=p

Aerodynamic kit, xenons, heated seats, just had an MOT so you can look if it had advisories etc, full BMWSH at 76k so it should have had an INSP2 recently and lots of stuff done to it by that mileage/age...

108's on there... no sat nav but I prefer that clean look :)

Good chance you can haggle down a bit, and it's from a trader, so some warranty, AND they will want to shift it on as it's not their normal stock. Was probably traded in by someone starting a business or something!?

More likely to be a good genuine car than many others, and has some nice unique bits to it which adds to the fun of owning it :)

Not too sure about the aero package on that one. looks a bit aftermarket for my liking.

what do you reckon about this one?

has new discs and pads all round, its pretty over valued but what do you think a fair price for it is?

Cheers

This one is his own car he brought a few months back, its due a service as was last at bmw at 61k.... hummm,

its a good two hour drive, but i do like the black.

my car is now up on PH if you want a look at some pics...http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1795866.htm
not the best photographer in the world but you can see the grey on grey goes well.

yeh its a nice car, but you are a long way away and the fact youve owned it a few months scares me that there is a big bill hiding

and its too expensive for me.

its too far for me to come and view.

Hi guys,

I am new to the forum so hello!

I just sold my car and looking to get a 3.0 sub 10,000 if possible!

What do you mean by advisories on the MOT cert, how do we check this online? Is it free? I have never bought a car privately so this is all new to me.

Thanks,

doc

im off to look at one tomorrow, sub looks good so fingers crossed its ok condition when i get there..

maybe driving home tomorrow instead of getting the train!

Bloody awful rims on it, needs a nice set of 108's or ellips

Yeah, nasty M3 reps. Also doesn't suit the colour of the car, really.

Price is also too high considering it's 58k and only a 2.5i.

yeh i dont like it either,

how much is a full set of second hand these? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-Z4-18-alloy-wheel-Potenza-255-35-18-tyre-Ellipsoid-/260619520727?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Rims_Car_Wheels_ET&hash=item3cae224ad7

im off to see a 3.0 grey, few good options, done 60k bmw service just been done.

what do you reckon is a fiar price, he has put 9200, so start at 8700?

cheers
