This is the set up I have, you basically plug the charger into a socket then plug the other end into the cigarette lighter and set the charger to cold mode. The charger then detects any discharge of the battery and switches itself on to top it up.It can also be used to charge the battery if flat.I find it most usefull for my set up as it is mainly used to keep my battery charged when the car is in the garage and all you need to do is plug it into the fag lighter and swith it on.

You don't want to jump your own car? Wha??? Your going to call someone to do it? Just get some jumper cables and get yr friends car and jump it. The battery is in the trunk area - or "the boot" as you call it. I thought you Brits were a tough lot! Keep calm and carry on!

So where do I get one of these Ctek trickle chargers? Can someone send me a link? Thanks!

You don't.

It's just a massive waste of money and totally obscure advice.

In all the time you've had the car the battery has never gone flat on you, you left a light on and killed it which is fair enough. The way you use your car clearly keeps the battery charged so that's a non issue.

The debate should be quite simple Ruby

Is the car used regularly IE daily so as to continually charge the battery ? Answer Yes / No trickle charger required as pretty pointless

Is the car used minimally IE only at weekends or sunny days ? Answer Yes / Trickle charger is beneficial to condition of battery & extending battery life

I have used one on all my weekend car,s for the last 4 years & yet to replace a battery / i don,t use one on our daily driven car,s :driving:

Is the car garaged? If then the car is used minimally as Mr Wilks asked maybe an option would be one of these, http://www.sunshinesolar.co.uk/khxc/index.php?app=gbu0&ns=prodshow&ref=SUN006&sid=60m81a2h9r2u14p72724r94s59126rm3 plug into ciggy lighter and place on dash.

Andi.

I killed my battery on my first Z4 within 2 years by not driving it daily, so I have a ctek on all cars except the dailys.

Personally, I wouldn't jump start off the direct connections to the battery - there are terminal points under the bonnet that *can* be used for this.

Oh, and I also use a ctek if I leave the car in the garage for longer than a week or two

I've left mine for 3 months while on deployment, not connected to anything

They've done studies, 60% of the time, it works everytime

yeah, that's about the long and short of it... I don't use my motorbike much, and never in winter - it has a charger on it.

the Zed is going into my mates garage out the way for winter, so it has a charger...

for the daily use cars, no charger needed.

LoL, so it doesn't work everytime, only about every other time? :)

Lol, it's an Anchorman quote Andi. I don't think Woots is quite that naive

Zactly

BMW's, Porsches and most of the German cars need a trickle on them if left for two weeks or more (some need it after a week). Daily and weekenders shouldn't need it, but if your car is locked and alarmed it drains the battery a lot quicker. And if you're driving with a battery that's 6yrs old , start looking for a new one. This isn't the old days where you could flush it out and add new acid, charge it and have another 4 yrs , todays' batteries are designed to run out of life in 5-7 years.

For clarification I was recommending the ctek as the function to charge and recondition your battery would be useful for anybody who has recently flattened their battery; it may be salvageable and AGM batteries are not cheap to replace.

If you haven't got a battery charger then why not have one that can also function as a maintainer charger too for what is essentially the price of a tank of fuel. The comfort connection lead/cigar adaptor also prevents incorrect polarity connection; something that cannot be said for jump leads...

I would have pushed the other car over, boosted the battery .....and not told everyone in the world that I was a doofus :poke: :poke: :D

Have a Merry Christmas Rubes, and don't leave the light on.
