Help - is this normal?

Following the lack of response to my post in E89 the problem area, I wonder if some of you would be kind enough to help me?
If you've got any variant of the 6-cylinder N54 engine, would you mind taking the oil filler cap of when whilst the engine is idling and tell me what sort of noise you can hear?
Thanks.

Not to be alarmist Terry but I remember on the N47 diesel engines BMW had problems with timing chain failures which was preceeded by a distinct chuffing sound whereby the sprocket teeth wore prematurely. Obviously a different engine but same principle. Not heard of this on the N54 though :|

Tim.

not sure if its the same thing but when i did this to an mr2 turbo i had, the engine would start idling funny and seem as if it was about to stall

iam sure you need something like this http://q.gs/4yaLv
Thank you nektgen for that useless piece of information.
It clearly hasn't worked for you as you still need to spam and have already done so on at least 12 other threads on this website.

Could you post a video containing the noise?

Yeh my 2011 E89 is also showing extenuating Tappet rattle when cold. I am taking it is to the dealer, but after googling the problem it seen to be very common. Will let you know the outcome. :(

I think you will find any car will make that noise when you remove the filler cap.
Usually get a face full of oil splash!

Is this on a hot or cold (or both) engine? I will have a listen first thing in the morning as I have to go off to work now. I have noticed my engine to be a bit lumpy and juddery when accelerating from cold but this does clear after about 30 seconds.

Great video by the way and I share your concern and hope it is nothing. Will let you know shortly what I find (My engine has done 5000 miles).

Cheers JC :D

I'll take a look when I get back to my car on the weekend.

Doesn't sounds like a worrying noise to me though.

Here's a vid of mine:

We're an exciting bunch here. Video clips of engine noises 8)

Well guys, many thanks to JC and R.E92 for the videos - they sound just like mine!
I still don't think it sounds "right" but I am now happy that it is "normal"

Having sent a copy of my video to the supplying dealer (Cooper Durham) with a request for comments it transpires that I am by no means the first person to have concerns. One of the technicians rang me and explained that is is a function of the lean burn technology which these engines employ and is caused by reduced fuel flow at low revs. He also offered to demonstrate similar sounds on most of the cars on the forecourt next time I am up there!

So, moral of the story, don't listen to the engine at low revs, jump in and listen to it whilst driving at higher speeds :driving:
